Overview of the summer transformation
As we already mentioned, we at Discovering Destinations have been living in downtown Montreal for about 15 years now. During the summertime, we see a huge transformation around the city, including the closure of some streets for the season.
However, in our view, the biggest and most fun transformation occurs in The Village, where each year features a different theme or decoration, bringing a unique vibrancy to the area and the city as a whole.
The Pink Balls at Village Montreal
A few years ago, we even heard The Village being called “The Pink Balls” street by tourists and locals. This was because in 2011, the Canadian artist and landscape architect from Quebec, Claude Cormier, and his team designed the Pink Balls to decorate The Village during the summer. This installation first appeared in 2011, creating a canopy over Ste-Catherine Street East.
The Pink Balls became a hallmark of The Village, and we loved the feeling of summer when they were installed, always bringing our family and friends to visit the area.
However, the Pink Balls, which were later replaced in 2017 by balls in all colors of the rainbow, dubbed “18 shades of gay,” were permanently retired in September 2019. You can read more about at CBC News official website.
Currently, in the summer of 2024, The Village has a new design where you can follow the rainbow painted on the ground, guiding you to explore the closed street with its many activities and restaurants.

There are several ways to get to the village that is located near of some the main metro stations of downtown Montreal.
Following some of the options and tips in how to get there:
Getting to Village Montreal by Metro
- By Metro: Convenient stations (Berri, Beaudry, Papineau)
While Beaudry is the official metro station of The Village, you can also get there by Berri-UQAM and Papineau metro stations.
We suggest starting at Berri-UQAM, or even better, the Green Line of Papineau metro station and ending your tour at Berri-UQAM. This way, you’ll have more options to finish your tour of The Village by shopping at Place Dupuis or visiting the square and attending shows at Jardins Gamelin.

Get a bus – Village Montreal
- By Bus
If you’re visiting Montreal for the first time and staying in or exploring the Old Port, and you’d like to visit the Village, you can take bus 715. This bus departs from the ‘De la Commune / Jacques-Cartier’ square and will drop you off at the Berri-UQAM metro station.
From there, you can easily walk into the Village. It’s a great option if you prefer not to use the metro, as the bus route takes you through the heart of the Old Port and offers a scenic view of the city on the way to the Village.

Car to Village Montreal

While driving is an option, we don’t recommend it due to limited and expensive parking in the downtown area.
Additionally, as already mentioned, Saint Catherine Street is closed to vehicles and only open to pedestrians during the summer, and there is often a lot of traffic and significant construction around Montreal.
If you prefer not to use the metro, bus, or bike, we suggest using an Uber or booking a private guided tour that can drive you there. These options can provide a more convenient and stress-free way to explore the Village.
3. Where to Stay in The Village
While visiting Montreal, it’s common to stay around Montreal city center or Old Port Montreal.
However, there are also great options for staying around The Village that can be fun and provide easy access to excellent metro lines, such as Berri-UQAM station, to explore the rest of Montreal, as Old Port of Montreal.
We picked these hotels for their excellent location, just a few steps from Berri-UQAM metro station. This central spot offers easy access to Montreal’s attractions. You can conveniently get here by taking the 747 bus from the airport or by arriving at the nearby Montreal Bus Terminal. Plus, some of these hotels have parking options, making them a great choice whether you’re using public transport or driving.

We’ve stayed here before and loved the experience. The hostel features a cool restaurant, bar, and a terrace. They offer shared dorm rooms as well as private rooms, including small apartments like the one we stayed in.

Fairfield is another great option with a prime location. While we haven’t stayed there ourselves, we’ve visited some rooms and common areas since Serge’s family has stayed there a few times when visiting from Ottawa. Additionally, some friends from Brazil have stayed there and enjoyed it.

- Features a restaurant and is located on Berri Street, close to great coffee shops, restaurants, and The Village.

Hyatt Place Montreal is really well located and connected to Place Dupuis shopping center, offering underground access to Berri-UQAM metro station and the Grande Bibliothèque of Montreal.

The Best Starting Point: Papineau Metro
For an enjoyable visit to Village Montreal, we recommend starting at the Papineau metro station. This allows you to explore the entire street from the beginning and finish your tour at the Berri-UQAM metro area.
Here, you’ll find more attractions to extend your day, especially if you want to enjoy the nightlife.

As previously mentioned, Saint Catherine Street is closed to pedestrians and offers various activities. A good starting point is one of the information booths located at the beginning of the streets, where you can pick up a leaflet detailing the schedule for different festivals throughout the summer.
If the Information booths are not available, you can also check for Events in the Village Montreal official website.
Free Magazine: “Fugues”
Another tip is to grab a copy of “Fugues,” the Village’s official magazine, which is completely free.
You can find it in French at the information points on Saint Catherine Street or in certain commercial establishments like the Pharmaprix pharmacy or the Rachelle-Béry organic supermarket located at 1150 St Catherine St E, Montreal, Quebec H2L 2G7.

During the summer, the Village hosts numerous events & festivals.
For instance, in July 2024, while recording our VLog ‘Discovering The Village | Montreal’s Must-Visit Summer Spot & Montreal’s Most Colorful Neighborhood’, the Festival Mtl en Arts was taking place, showcasing artists who were creating live murals and other art pieces.
There were also various stalls with artisans selling their crafts, ranging from pepper containers to beautiful paintings suitable for your home, office, or public spaces.Although this festival has passed, we will provide links to some artists we liked so you can follow or contact them.
Other festivals continue until the end of the summer events, including the famous Gay Parade, usually held in August each year.
