After exploring popular spots like Athens, Santorini, and Delphi, we wanted something off the beaten path in the Peloponnese. While researching beach destinations, we discovered that Greece is packed with famous spots, but we were craving a unique experience away from the usual tourist crowds.
Thanks to recommendations from friendly locals we met in Nafplio, we set our sights on Monemvasia, a stunning medieval fortress town perched on a small island. Even though we only spent an afternoon and one night there, Monemvasia completely captivated us.

Quick History of Monemvasia, Greece
To be honest, before visiting the Peloponnese region of Greece, we had never heard of Monemvasia or its famous castle. Have you? Let us know in the comments! Since we didn’t know much about it, we thought we’d share a quick introduction to this incredible place before diving into the rest of our blog.
After visiting the usual must-see spots in Greece like Athens and Santorini, we were staying near Tolo Beach, just 17 minutes from Nafplio, the first capital of Greece. We wanted to explore something off the beaten path, so we asked the locals for recommendations. They suggested Monemvasia—a stunning, less touristy region.
We considered other beach destinations like Zakynthos, but ultimately, we wanted a mix of history and beaches. That’s when we knew Monemvasia was the perfect choice.
Monemvasia is a town and municipality in Laconia, Greece, most famous for its medieval fortress perched on a small island connected to the mainland by a narrow causeway. It offers breathtaking sea views, historic churches, cliffs, and almost deserted beaches that feel like hidden gems.
The Medieval Fortress of Monemvasia is the main attraction. It’s incredibly well-preserved, with narrow, cobbled streets, ancient walls, and historic churches waiting to be explored. Walking through Monemvasia felt like stepping back in time.
Interestingly, Monemvasia reminded us of Mont-Saint-Michel in France, which we visited in 2017. While they aren’t connected architecturally or historically—Monemvasia was founded in 583 AD, well before Mont-Saint-Michel—they both evoke the same feeling of awe, isolation, and beauty. Both places let you explore winding streets and experience breathtaking, fortified landscapes with sweeping views.
So, whether you’re a history lover or someone who craves stunning sea views and peaceful beaches, Monemvasia is a must-visit!
How to Get to Monemvasia, Greece
Monemvasia is truly a hidden gem in Greece, offering breathtaking views without the usual crowds—especially if you visit in the spring or fall. Since it’s not as popular as other tourist destinations in Greece, finding day tours, especially group tours, can be a challenge. While this means a more peaceful experience, it also makes visiting a bit pricier.
Here are our top suggestions for how to get to Monemvasia based on our experience and research:
By Car – Driving to Monemvasia, Greece
In our opinion, the best way to reach Monemvasia is by car. Here’s why:
- Freedom to explore: Having your own car gives you the freedom to stop and take in the stunning views along the way.
- Well-maintained roads: The highways in Greece are generally well-maintained and easy to drive, making the journey smooth.
- Discover hidden gems: With a car, you can explore not just Monemvasia’s fortress, but also nearby villages, secluded beaches, and hidden spots that tours won’t cover.
- Flexibility: You can stop at scenic viewpoints, take detours, and really make the most of your road trip without sticking to a schedule.
For us, driving from Tolo Beach to Monemvasia took around 3 hours and 15 minutes on fast highways. If you’re starting from Nafplio, a charming town we highly recommend, it’s about a 3-hour drive via the highway, or around 3.5 hours if you take the coastal route for more scenic views. From Athens, expect a drive of about 3 hours and 50 minutes.
A Few Downsides of Driving:
- Tolls: You’ll encounter tolls on the way to Monemvasia. While we can’t remember the exact cost, you can check the website “Toll Guru” for a calculation to help plan your budget.
- Driving time: The trip can be a bit tiring, especially if you don’t want to spend hours driving. Some travelers might prefer a guided tour to sit back, relax, and enjoy the scenery.
- Parking: Parking in Monemvasia can be tricky, as the old town is pedestrian-only. You’ll need to park outside the walls and walk into the town.
However, we understand for some people, driving in a foreign country like Greece can feel intimidating. With that in mind, Serge put together plenty of tips from our 25 days of driving in Greece, including helpful information about tolls, parking, and even our road trip to Santorini, one of the most famous Greek islands.
By Bus to Monemvasia, Greece
If driving isn’t for you, don’t worry—you can still reach Monemvasia using public transportation, though only up to a certain point. During our research on Google Maps, we didn’t see any direct public transport options available.
However, on other websites, we found some options of bus routes departing from Athens and other major towns like Nafplio. Keep in mind, there are no direct buses to Monemvasia, so the journey will include a few stops along the way.

Things to Consider:
- Longer travel time: Buses take longer than driving, and there are no direct routes to Monemvasia.
- Less flexibility: Unlike driving, you won’t be able to stop and explore other areas along the way.
By Ferry to Monemvasia, Greece
Based on our research, there are no direct ferries from Athens to Monemvasia. However, you can combine a ferry from Athens (Port of Piraeus) to Methana and then drive from there to Monemvasia.
This option can be more complex and time-consuming, so we personally don’t recommend it unless you’re already planning to explore other coastal regions by ferry. We would suggest you visit the Rome2Rio website where they have further information about Ferry to Monemvasia, clicking here.
Ferry Research Tips:
- Check available ferry schedules and prices from Athens or Nafplio if you’re interested in a ferry-leg journey, but keep in mind that you’ll still need to drive part of the way to Monemvasia.
Monemvasia Tour from Athens, Greece
For those who prefer not to drive, we often recommend Get Your Guide for booking tours. We’ve used it on our trips and highly recommend it to our travel consulting clients as well. The website is easy to use and offers tools to check prices, read customer reviews, see what activities are included, and, most of the time, enjoy free cancellation up to 24 hours before your trip.
After doing some research at Get Your Guide, we found that there are a few guided tours available to Monemvasia from Athens or Nafplio. While most are private tours, they can be a great option for travelers who don’t want to rent a car, deal with tolls, insurance, gas, or the time spent driving. For the peace of mind and the ability to relax and enjoy the views, these tours are reasonably priced.
We’ll leave some guided tour options below that you can explore, and you can always check availability or add them to your wish list.
Where to Stay in Monemvasia, Greece
Whenever we start planning a trip, one of the first things we think about is where to stay—what’s the best location, what fits our budget, and which hotels offer the best value.
Monemvasia, Greece, didn’t disappoint. The area offers a wide range of accommodations, from luxury hotels to budget-friendly options. Here are a few of our top recommendations based on our personal experience and what we learned during our visit.
Iris Beach Hotel, Monemvasia, Greece (4.3 Google, 8.6 Hotels.com)
We stayed at Iris Beach Hotel, located about a 15-minute drive from Monemvasia Castle and fortress. Here’s why we loved it:
- Mini Beach Nearby: Just a 1-minute walk from the hotel, perfect for a quick swim!
- Beautiful Sea Views: Our room had a partial sea view, and it was stunning.
- Great Common Area: There’s a lovely communal space, though we didn’t use it much since we were out exploring.
- Budget-Friendly: Perfect for us, as we only stayed one night and were out most of the time.

While we enjoyed our stay outside the fortress, we couldn’t help but dream about staying inside Monemvasia Castle after seeing how beautiful it is. The atmosphere feels like stepping back in time, and we knew we wanted to return for a longer stay.

Top Things to Do in Monemvasia, Greece
When we first planned our trip to Monemvasia, Greece, we didn’t know exactly what to expect. That’s why we only planned to stay one night before heading to Elafonisos. (You can read more about our Elafonisos adventure in our upcoming blog and vlog.)
After arriving at Monemvasia Castle in the late afternoon, we only had a couple of hours to explore before heading back to our hotel for dinner at a hidden gem of a restaurant up in the mountains. But to be honest, we wished we had stayed at least three nights in Monemvasia to fully explore the stunning castle, its charming hotels, and the surrounding region.
Here are our top recommendations for things to do in Monemvasia:
Monemvasia Castle – The Fortress
One of the must-do activities in Monemvasia is exploring the famous Monemvasia Fortress. Back in May 2024, there was no entrance fee to visit the fortress, making it even better!
Here are the top highlights you shouldn’t miss when visiting Monemvasia Fortress:
- Walk through the medieval cobbled streets inside the fortress.
- Visit the beautiful Church of Agia Sophia, which offers incredible views.
- Explore the Byzantine walls that surround the old town.
- Stop at the charming local cafes inside the castle for a taste of Greek coffee.
- Admire the stunning sea views from the fortress walls.
- Visit some of the historic churches scattered throughout the fortress.
- Take a moment to relax at a viewpoint and absorb the quiet beauty of the area.
Take a Break for Coffee at Malvasia Café
Even though we didn’t have much time at Monemvasia Fortress, and had planned to dine at a restaurant outside the fortress (stay tuned for that tip later!), we walked a lot and decided to stop for a quick coffee and snack at Malvasia Café, located at Κάστρο, Monemvasia 230 70, Greece.
We highly recommend the walk to this café for two reasons:
- The path is incredible—you’ll discover parts of the medieval city along the way.
- The view is spectacular—it’s the perfect place to enjoy a coffee with a scenic backdrop.

Shopping at Monemvasia Fortress, Peloponnese, Greece
One thing we highly recommend is stopping by the local shops at Monemvasia Fortress to explore the unique craft stores. You’ll find a variety of souvenirs and local products that reflect the region’s culture and creativity. From handmade art pieces and decorations to clothing and delicious local food products, there’s something special for everyone.

Tips for Visiting Monemvasia Castle:
- No Entrance Fee: As of May 2024, visiting the fortress was free.
- Parking: You can drive across the bridge to reach the castle, but you’ll need to park just before the entrance, as cars aren’t allowed inside the fortress. If you prefer not to drive or walk uphill, you can rent a motorcycle or electric scooter to go up near the entrance. However, be aware that even these options can’t go inside the fortress, so you’ll need to explore on foot.
- Comfortable Shoes: Since you can’t drive inside the Monemvasia Fortress, be prepared to walk on uneven cobblestone streets. Comfortable shoes are a must!
- Timing: Visit in the morning or late afternoon to avoid the heat and enjoy the best light for photos.
Gefira, Monemvasia, Greece
Just before reaching the castle, you’ll pass through Gefira, a charming little town by the sea. Although we didn’t have much time to explore, here are a few things you can do if you have some extra time in the area:
- Enjoy a meal at one of the local tavernas by the water.
- Relax on the small beach of Paralia, Monemvasias perfect for a quick swim.
- Browse the local shops for souvenirs and handmade crafts.
- Take a boat ride to explore the beautiful coastline and sea.
- Admire the stunning views of Monemvasia Island and the fortress from a different perspective.
Beaches Around Monemvasia, Greece
If you’re looking for beautiful beaches, there are a few gems around Monemvasia that are worth visiting. One of our favorites was Ambelakia Beach, which was conveniently located next to the Iris Beach Hotel where we stayed.

Επιδήλιον Restaurant (Taverna Epidilion), Monemvasia Region, Greece
Located in the remote village of Foutia, about 27 minutes’ drive from Monemvasia Castle, lies the hidden gem Taverna Epidilion (Επιδήλιον). The drive up the mountain was quite the adventure—beautiful, but also a bit nerve-wracking, especially at night! But trust us, it’s totally worth it.
Here’s what made it unforgettable:
- Incredible Views: The drive offers gorgeous mountain and sea views, even though it can be a bit scary at night.
- Phenomenal Food: The traditional Greek food was fantastic. We were the only guests there in May 2024, so it felt like we had a private dining experience with super friendly service.
- Wildlife Spotting: We even saw a fox on the road, which added to the adventure!
We recommend visiting for lunch to avoid the nighttime drive, but either way, it’s a memorable experience in a quaint, local village.
