Looking for the perfect escape from Marrakech? This Essaouira day trip from Marrakech became one of the most unexpected highlights of our two-week Morocco itinerary.

Nestled along the Atlantic Coast, Essaouira surprised us with its laid-back vibe, fresh sea breeze, and vibrant medina. What started as a spontaneous change in plans quickly turned into one of our favorite memories in Morocco—and trust us, we explored a lot, including the Sahara Desert, the Atlas Studios, and the buzzing streets of Marrakech.

To be honest, Essaouira wasn’t originally part of our travel itinerary. During our trip to Morocco in October 2023, we focused mostly on desert adventures and cultural sites around Marrakech. But then one evening, I (Lia) watched a YouTube video that introduced me to Essaouira Beach and the city’s calm coastal charm. Being a lover of seaside destinations, I knew I had to squeeze it in.

Thankfully, Serge was open to swapping one of our desert tours for a day trip to the coast. And wow—what a great decision! We booked our excursion with Get Your Guide, and the experience turned out to be one of the best day trips from Marrakech.

A Brief History of Essaouira: From Ancient Port to UNESCO World Heritage Site

Before our trip to Morocco, we hadn’t heard of Essaouira. But once we visited, we were captivated by its rich history and unique charm. Understanding its past deepened our appreciation for this coastal gem.

Ancient Roots and Strategic Importance

Essaouira, formerly known as Mogador, has been a significant port city for centuries. Archaeological findings reveal that the area was originally a Phoenician trading post, later influenced by Cretans, Greeks, and Romans. The name “Mogador” is believed to derive from the Phoenician word “Migdol,” meaning a small fort. UNESCO World Heritage Centre

18th-Century Urban Planning

According Wikipedia, the modern city of Essaouira was established in 1765 by Sultan Mohammed ben Abdallah. He aimed to create a well-defended port to enhance trade with Europe and the rest of the world. To achieve this, he commissioned French engineer Théodore Cornut, who designed the city with a blend of European military architecture and North African urban planning principles.

A Melting Pot of Cultures

Essaouira quickly became a melting pot of cultures, attracting traders, artisans, and diplomats from various backgrounds. Its strategic location made it a hub for commerce between Morocco, Europe, and sub-Saharan Africa. The city’s diverse population included Muslims, Jews, and Christians, contributing to its rich cultural tapestry.

UNESCO World Heritage Recognition

In 2001, the Medina of Essaouira was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This recognition highlights its exceptional example of a late-18th-century fortified town, reflecting the interchange of European and North African cultures. Click here to check further information at UNESCO official website.

Today, Essaouira stands as a testament to Morocco’s historical depth and cultural diversity, offering visitors a unique blend of history, architecture, and coastal beauty.

How to Get to Essaouira from Marrakech

How to Get to Essaouira from Marrakech - Essaouira - Morocco - Day trip from Marrakech - Marrakech day trip - Morocco Travel Blog - by Discovering Destinations

If you’re wondering how to get to Essaouira, you’re not alone—we had the same question when we decided to visit Essaouira. In our case, we chose a day trip tour from Marrakech to Essaouira with Get Your Guide, and it turned out to be one of the most relaxing and enjoyable days of our entire itinerary.

Our GetYourGuide Tour to Essaouira: Stops, Tips & What to Expect

Our day trip from Marrakech to Essaouira - Morocco - Day trip from Marrakech - Marrakech day trip - Morocco Travel Blog - by Discovering Destinations

Our day trip from Marrakech to Essaouira took a little longer than driving straight, but it was totally worth it. The journey itself was about 2 hours and 50 minutes, but with three scenic stops along the way, the drive felt like part of the adventure:

  • A relaxing coffee break at a Moroccan-style oasis café
  • A visit to an Argan oil cooperative, where we learned about traditional oil production
  • A short photo stop at a viewpoint with panoramic views of Essaouira and the Atlantic coast

Once we arrived in Essaouira, we had about three hours of free time to explore the Essaouira medina, enjoy a local seafood lunch, shop for souvenirs, and take in the ocean views. For a day trip, it felt just right—enough time to soak up the vibe without rushing too much.

Other Ways to Get to Essaouira

While we believe a tour is the best way to experience Essaouira in one day, you might be planning to stay longer—or simply prefer more flexibility.

So here are other options we considered while researching:

Drive from Marrakech to Essaouira

  • Duration: Approximately 2h50min without stops
  • Road Conditions: The route is mostly paved and well-maintained, following the N8 and N1 highways
  • Rental Option: Renting a car in Morocco is affordable, and even though we were initially unsure about driving, it turned out to be quite manageable once we got out of Marrakech’s busy city center. It’s actually a fun and flexible way to explore Morocco at your own pace
  • Bonus: You can stop wherever you like—whether it’s to see the famous goats in argan trees, admire scenic viewpoints, or grab a snack at a hidden roadside café.

Thinking of Driving from Marrakech to Essaouira?

If you prefer exploring Morocco at your own pace, renting a car is a great option—especially for the scenic drive between Marrakech and Essaouira (around 2h50). The roads are in good condition, and you’ll have the freedom to stop at cafés, viewpoints, and even snap a photo of goats in argan trees!

When it comes to booking your rental, here are two reliable platforms we personally recommend:

🔹 Rentalcars.com by Booking

Perfect for first-time travelers or anyone already booking hotels through Booking.com. Their site is easy to use, and they offer a wide selection of local rental companies in Morocco.

🔹 Auto Europe

Another trusted platform with competitive rates and a reputation for clear rental policies and great service—especially if you’re planning to rent in other parts of Europe too.

Our tip: We recommend starting your search on Rentalcars.com, as it usually shows more options for Marrakech and tends to be better for Moroccan destinations. But it’s always a good idea to compare both to see who has the best deal and insurance terms for your dates.

What About Public Transportation from Marrakech to Essaouira?

We didn’t try the public transportation option ourselves, and when we searched on Google Maps, it surprisingly didn’t show any available transit route between Marrakech and Essaouira (see screenshot above). But don’t worry—it does exist!

According to our research, there are reliable bus services like CTM and Supratours that connect the two cities. These buses typically take around 3 hours, with air-conditioned coaches and designated departure times. It’s an affordable and popular choice among travelers who aren’t renting a car or joining a tour.

📝 Tip: Tickets can be booked online in advance, and we recommend doing so during busy seasons to guarantee a seat.

  • Companies: CTM and Supratours looks like are the most reliable options
  • Duration: Around 3 hours, depending on traffic and route
  • Departure Points: CTM Bus Station or Supratours Station near Marrakech Train Station, check their oficial websites for further information.
  • Tickets: Can be booked online or at the station (we recommend booking in advance in high season).

Estimated Ticket Price for Public Buses

As of April 2025, ticket prices for the bus from Marrakech to Essaouira range from approximately 80 to 120 Moroccan Dirhams (MAD) — that’s around $10 to $16 CAD, depending on the bus company and the class of service.

Reliable operators include Supratours and CTM, both offering air-conditioned coaches and multiple departures daily.

Is Public Transportation Worth It for a Day Trip?

If you’re considering doing a round trip on the same day, it’s important to calculate the total cost (both ways) — in most cases, it can end up being more expensive than a stress-free guided tour, especially when you factor in taxis to and from the bus station, meal stops, and time.

Most guided tours (like the one we booked with GetYourGuide) include:

  • Hotel pick-up and drop-off (at Marrakesh main square)
  • Scenic photo stops and experiences along the way
  • And 3 to 5 free hours in Essaouira to explore at your own pace

Our Tip: Public transportation is a good choice if you’re planning to stay overnight or a few days in Essaouira and don’t want to rent a car. Otherwise, for a smooth and efficient day trip, a guided tour may offer better value and peace of mind.

Flights to Essaouira (for longer trips)

  • Essaouira has a small airport (ESU), but flights are limited and not ideal for a day trip
  • Some international flights land here, but most travelers fly into Marrakech or Casablanca first
  • This could be an option if you’re combining Essaouira with Agadir or the coast on a longer Morocco itinerary

Where to Stay in Essaouira: Our Top Picks for Riads and Hotels

Where to stay - Hotels Essaouira - Morocco - Day trip from Marrakech - Marrakech day trip - Morocco Travel Blog - by Discovering Destinations

Although we visited Essaouira as a day trip from Marrakech, we completely fell in love with its charm and coastal vibe—and by the end of the day, we truly wished we had stayed longer.

If we get the chance to return to Morocco, we’d love to spend 3 days to a week in Essaouira, or even explore more of Morocco’s stunning Atlantic coastline.

During our walk through the Essaouira medina, we came across several beautiful riads and boutique hotels that really caught our eye. Many of them had gorgeous rooftop terraces, colorful tiles, and cozy courtyards.

And believe us—compared to hotel prices in Montreal and Canada in general, Essaouira offers some truly amazing places to stay, often with breathtaking views of the sea and medina at very reasonable prices.

What Is a Riad?

If you’re not familiar with the term, a riad is a traditional Moroccan house or palace, typically built around a central courtyard or garden. These homes are designed to offer peace, privacy, and beauty—with intricately tiled walls, lush greenery, and sometimes even a small fountain in the middle.

According to our Riad manager in Marrakech, riads were originally built to accommodate large extended families. For example, it was common for children to continue living with their parents even after marriage. But as living styles changed and more families began choosing private homes, many riads were transformed into boutique hotels and guesthouses.

For us, staying in a riad is a unique and authentic Moroccan experience—especially since most are located right in the heart of the historic medinas.

Our GetYourGuide Essaouira Day Trip from Marrakech: What to Expect

Day trip Essaouira from Marrakech - Morocco

Since we were short on time during our Morocco itinerary, we decided to book a GetYourGuide day trip from Marrakech to Essaouira—and we’re so glad we did! It turned out to be one of the most relaxing and scenic days of our entire trip.

The total duration of the tour was around 10 to 12 hours, and we felt the pace was just right.

Here’s a breakdown of how our day went:

  • First stop: Coffee break at an oasis-style café (Skala Café)
We’re not 100% sure of the address, but this little roadside café had fun oasis-style decor and friendly service. It was a great first stop to stretch our legs and enjoy a traditional Moroccan coffee.
  • Second stop: Argan oil demonstration at Marjana Cooperative
This was a definite highlight. We visited Marjana Cooperative, a sustainable women’s argan oil production center. We watched how argan oil is traditionally made and had the chance to buy authentic, locally produced argan products.
  • Third stop: Scenic photo viewpoint overlooking Essaouira’s coast
Just before reaching Essaouira, we stopped at a beautiful coastal viewpoint. It’s a quick stop, but perfect for capturing photos of the Atlantic and getting a first glimpse of the city from above.
  • Arrival in Essaouira
Our guide gave a short introduction and shared some useful tips before letting us explore the city on our own. We don’t remember the exact amount of time, but we believe it was around three to four hours of free time to enjoy the Essaouira medina, grab lunch by the sea, and soak in the relaxed vibe of this Atlantic gem. It actually felt like we had even more time — we wandered through the medina, took plenty of photos along the coast, and still had time to enjoy a leisurely lunch.

Important: Pickup Information

The GetYourGuide tours usually includes hotel pickup, but if you’re staying in Marrakech’s medina, it’s important to know that cars aren’t allowed to drive through the medina streets. In that case, your pickup will likely be arranged at a nearby accessible location, such as the main square Jemaa el-Fnaa.

As we wandered through the medina, we met a friendly local who pointed out the ornate door of Riad Mimouna. According to him, this very spot appeared in a Game of Thrones scene—and while we couldn’t confirm that officially, it definitely felt like something straight out of a medieval fantasy.

Local Tip & Fun Fact:

While the door of Riad Mimouna is not officially listed as a Game of Thrones filming location, it’s located right near the Skala de la Ville and the fortified sea walls, which were used to depict Astapor in Season 3. The atmosphere in this part of Essaouira—stone walls, crashing waves, dramatic textures—truly transports you into another world.

Where to Eat in Essaouira: Honest Tips from Our Experience

Where to Eat - Essaouira - Morocco - Day trip from Marrakech - Marrakech day trip - Morocco Travel Blog - by Discovering Destinations

We love discovering local food spots when we travel, especially in a place as charming as Essaouira. While exploring the medina, we saw plenty of great restaurants with cozy decor, fresh seafood menus, and excellent Google reviews. But instead of choosing one of them, we decided to try something a little more “local-looking” near the beach. Unfortunately, it turned out to be our worst meal in Morocco—and probably the most overpriced.

That’s why we want to start this section by sharing where NOT to eat before giving you our real suggestions based on what we saw and researched during our visit.

    Powered by GetYourGuide

Where NOT to Eat in Essaouira, Morocco

After exploring the Skala de la Ville and the fortified sea walls, we walked down toward the beach and came across a few kiosks and open-air stalls. They seemed very local and casual—exactly the kind of place we usually love to try.

A man from one of the kiosks greeted us and explained they were preparing fresh fish and local meals. We chose a fish dish and some prawns (shrimps), and when we asked for the menu, he said it wasn’t necessary—they’d bring everything to the table.

    Unfortunately:

    • The fish was overcooked and lacked any flavor
    • The prawns were dry and equally disappointing
    • There was no menu, no receipt, and no clear pricing

When it was time to pay, the man asked Serge for 600 MAD (about $90 CAD)—which was shocking, especially considering the food quality. Serge laughed in disbelief and politely refused. After some back and forth, we ended up paying 400 MAD ($60 CAD), which still felt like too much for the worst meal we had in Morocco.

Our Tip: Be cautious when eating at informal beachside kiosks in Essaouira. Always ask for a menu and confirm the price before sitting down. What seems like a casual local experience can quickly turn into a tourist trap.

Where to Eat – Our Suggestions

If we could go back, here are three restaurants in Essaouira we noticed along our walk that looked amazing and had excellent reviews. We truly wish we had chosen one of them instead:

Restaurant Le MégaLorien, Essaouira – Morocco

    • Google Rating: 4.3 (April 2025)
    • Located in the medina, this place stood out with its friendly staff, cozy interior, and a varied menu featuring Moroccan and vegetarian dishes. A great choice for a calm sit-down meal with character.

The Loft , Essaouira – Morocco

    • Google Rating: 4.7 (April 2025)
    • A modern and welcoming restaurant with excellent service and beautifully plated dishes. We walked by and noticed the great ambiance and lots of happy diners—plus, it’s known for its great value for money.

Triskala Café (The One We Regret Missing!)

    • Google Rating: 4.6 (April 2025)
    • This one really caught our eye! The cozy boho decor, vegetarian-friendly menu, and glowing reviews made it a top contender. It was full when we passed by, which is always a good sign. If we return to Essaouira, this will be our first stop.

Quick Tip: What to Look for in a Good Essaouira Restaurant

Not all seafood meals are created equal—especially when you’re by the beach! Here are some quick tips to help you avoid tourist traps and find great places to eat in Essaouira:

    • Check the Google reviews (ideally 4.3 stars and up with recent feedback)
    • Look for a posted menu with prices—don’t rely on “verbal menus”
    • Clean and busy spots are usually more reliable
    • Ask locals or your guide for recommendations—they usually know the hidden gems
    • Be cautious with beachfront kiosks without signage or menus
    • If the fish is “fresh,” you should be able to see it before they cook it

Good to Know Before You Go: Tips for Visiting Essaouira

To help you make the most of your visit to Essaouira, Morocco, here are some extra travel tips based on our experience.

From what to wear to where to shop and general etiquette, this is everything we wish we had known in advance.

What to Wear in Essaouira, Morocco

One of the questions I (Lia) had before going to Morocco was: What should I wear as a woman to feel comfortable and still respect the local culture?

Before our trip, I bought a couple of long skirts and shirts that covered my shoulders, following tips I had read in a few travel blogs. And honestly, I’m so glad I did! I felt comfortable and confident during our entire trip—especially after observing how local women dressed. My goal was to blend in, avoid drawing too much attention, and most importantly, feel good while exploring.

I didn’t wear a headscarf, and that was totally fine. While most tourists we saw were dressed similarly to me—lightweight, modest, and casual—I also saw a few women wearing shorts or skirts above the knee. In one case, I noticed a girl who seemed uncomfortable when some local men stared or made comments. It wasn’t anything aggressive, but it was noticeable.

    So here’s my take:

    • Dress how you feel best, but if you’re unsure, lean toward comfort and cultural sensitivity.
    • You don’t need to cover your hair, but modest, breathable clothes will help you feel at ease and show respect.

Dress Code Tips for Essaouira’s Coastal Climate

Essaouira has a more relaxed vibe compared to cities like Marrakech or Fes, thanks to its coastal breeze and laid-back atmosphere. Still, here are a few tips to help you pack:

    • Lightweight, breathable fabrics are ideal – the weather is mild, but it can get windy near the coast
    • No need to cover your hair, but low-cut tops and very short shorts may attract unwanted attention
    • A light scarf or shawl is great for the breeze, sun protection, or modesty when entering religious areas
    • Comfortable walking shoes or sandals are essential for the medina’s cobblestone streets

Tip from Eli: I wore a cotton midi dress with sleeves and felt totally comfortable. Most locals are used to tourists, but dressing modestly always felt like the respectful choice—and it helped me enjoy every moment without worries.

Shopping in Essaouira: What to Buy

The Essaouira medina is full of beautiful artisan goods and is a more relaxed place to shop than in Marrakech—less pressure, better prices, and more space to browse.

Here are some items worth checking out:

    • Argan oil and cosmetics – Especially if you visit a women’s cooperative
    • Wooden crafts and carvings – Thuya wood is local to the region
    • Handmade jewelry – Berber-inspired or silver pieces
    • Scarves, textiles, and rugs – Many stalls offer high-quality, soft cotton fabrics
    • Spices and local sweets – Packaged neatly for travel

Haggling Tip: Bargaining is part of the fun, but always be respectful. If you feel good about the price, that’s reason enough to go for it.

Personal tip from Lia: And if you really like something—buy it! I fell in love with a pair of pants in the medina. I even tried them on and was ready to take them home. But Serge, based on his shirt-shopping experience in Marrakech, said to walk away because the seller would come after us with a better price. Well… that didn’t happen.

So yes—lesson learned: Listen to your heart, not your husband!
You can even spot the pants I didn’t buy in our travel vlog!

    • DAILY NOURISHMENT: Antioxidants from Argan Oil support healthy-looking skin and hair.
    • SALON-LIKE CARE: Argan Oil for hair locks in natural moisture, enhances hydration, and smooths frizzy hair from roots to…

Can You Drink the Tap Water in Essaouira?

While tap water in Morocco is generally treated and safe for locals, it’s recommended that visitors stick to bottled water to avoid any stomach issues during their trip. Bottled water is affordable and widely available in Essaouira. Also, don’t forget to bring a reusable bottle if you’re using a water purifier or tablets — it’s a great eco-friendly option!

    Travel Essentials for Essaouira, Morocco

To help you pack smart and travel stress-free, here’s a list of essential items we recommend for your trip to Essaouira, based on our own experience.

Whether you’re going for a day or planning to stay a few nights, these items will come in handy:

    Clothing & Accessories

    • Lightweight, modest clothing – Choose breathable fabrics like cotton or linen to stay cool during warm days while respecting local customs.
    • A light scarf or shawl (optional) – Ideal for the wind, sun protection, or when visiting cultural or religious sites.
    • Comfortable walking shoes or sandals – A must for exploring Essaouira’s medina, coastal paths, and uneven cobblestone streets.
    • Windbreaker or light jacket – Essaouira can get surprisingly cool, especially near the coast or in the evening. During our visit, fog rolled in by mid-afternoon, and the temperature dropped noticeably—so having an extra layer made all the difference.
    • Travel backpack or day bag – Great for carrying essentials like your water bottle, camera, snacks, or an extra layer. Choose something comfortable and secure, especially when navigating busy streets or markets.

    Health & Sun Protection

    • Sunscreen & lip balm with SPF – The coastal sun in Essaouira can be intense, even when it’s breezy or overcast, so daily protection is a must.
    • Sunglasses – A good pair of sunglasses is essential. The bright coastal light and ocean glare can be strong, especially when walking along the ramparts or the beach.
    • Reusable water bottle – It’s important to stay hydrated while walking around, but keep in mind that tap water in Morocco isn’t safe to drink. We brought our reusable bottles and filled them with bottled water, which is easily available in shops.
    • Hand sanitizer & tissues – Always carry a small pack, especially for public restrooms or local cafés. I personally found a few restrooms that didn’t have soap—so having hand sanitizer was a lifesaver!

    Tech & Travel Gear

    • Camera or smartphone with extra storage – Essaouira is packed with stunning photo opportunities, from the medina’s blue doors to epic coastal shots. Serge was in heaven capturing the views!

    • Portable charger – Especially if you’re doing a day trip from Marrakech, a power bank is essential to keep your phone or camera charged. We always carry two portable charges, just in case!
    • SIM card or eSIM (like Airalo) – We used an Airalo eSIM for navigation, looking up restaurant reviews, and even translating quick phrases—it worked perfectly in Essaouira and all over Morocco.

Bonus Tip: First-time Airalo users can save with our discount code! Check our Airalo Review page for details

Bonus Tip – Leave Room in Your Luggage

Essaouira is a great place to shop! From argan oil and wood carvings to unique clothing and jewelry, you’ll probably want to bring a few treasures home. So make sure to leave space in your suitcase (or bring a foldable tote just in case).

FAQ – Everything You Need to Know About Visiting Essaouira, Morocco

If you’re planning your first visit to this stunning coastal town, you probably have a few questions. Here are the top things people want to know before heading to Essaouira, Morocco—with answers based on our own experience and research.

    1. Is Essaouira, Morocco worth visiting?

Absolutely—Essaouira was one of our favorite stops in Morocco! It’s laid-back, beautiful, and full of charm. The medina is clean and well-organized, the coastal views are stunning, and the atmosphere is much more relaxed compared to bigger cities like Marrakech.

Just be sure to take your time and enjoy every moment!

    2. Was Game of Thrones filmed in Essaouira?

Yes! Scenes from Season 3, where Daenerys visits Astapor, were filmed along the Skala de la Ville and the fortified sea walls. While not every spot is confirmed, walking through the city truly feels like stepping into a medieval fantasy.

    3. Can you swim at the beach in Essaouira?

You can, but be prepared—the Atlantic waters are chilly and the strong winds attract more kitesurfers and surfers than sunbathers.

Looks like it’s not the classic beach lounging vibe, but it’s great for a walk or splash.

    4. Is Essaouira expensive?

Not at all! Compared to Canadian or European prices, we found Essaouira to be very affordable—especially when it comes to accommodations and shopping.

Just be cautious with beach kiosks, though—we fell into a tourist trap there ourselves. And be prepared to bargain in the medina; it’s part of the local culture, and sellers are used to it. Just remember to negotiate with a smile and always be respectful.

    5. How do I get from Marrakech to Essaouira?

We recommend booking a guided day trip like the one we took with GetYourGuide. Alternatively, you can rent a car and drive to Essaouira in about 2 hours and 50 minutes, or take a CTM or Supratours bus, which takes roughly 3 hours. Flights are available but limited—and for most travelers, they’re unnecessary.

    6. How many days do you need in Essaouira?

We visited for one day, but honestly—3 to 5 days would be ideal. Enough time to explore, relax, eat well, and even take a surf or cooking class.

    7. What is the best month to visit Essaouira?

Weather - Essaouira - Morocco - Day trip from Marrakech - Marrakech day trip - Morocco Travel Blog - by Discovering Destinations

From April to June and September to November are ideal times to visit Essaouira, with mild temperatures and fewer crowds. The city is cooler than inland Morocco, so even in summer, it stays breezy and pleasant. That said, weather can shift quickly.

We visited Essaouira in October 2023 and enjoyed a gorgeous sunny morning and early afternoon—but by late afternoon, fog rolled in and it got noticeably cooler just before we left.

So it’s a good idea to dress in layers and be prepared for temperature changes throughout the day.

    8. What language is spoken in Essaouira?

You’ll hear a mix of Moroccan Arabic, French, and Berber. Many locals working in tourism also speak English, especially in hotels and restaurants.

    9. Is Essaouira good for shopping?

Yes! It’s one of the best places to shop in Morocco.

The medina is calm, prices are fair, and you’ll find beautiful items like argan oil, thuya wood carvings, textiles, and jewelry.

    10. Do female tourists have to cover their hair in Morocco?

No, covering your hair isn’t required. We just suggest to dress modestly—lightweight clothes that cover your shoulders and knees are generally appreciated, especially in medinas.

    11. Do shops and restaurants in Essaouira accept credit cards?

Yes, many shops and restaurants in Essaouira do accept credit cards, especially in more tourist-friendly or upscale places. However, during our visit, we noticed that some vendors either didn’t accept cards or asked for an additional fee to cover transaction charges. For that reason, we preferred to carry cash—especially in the medina—since it made it easier to negotiate prices in the souks and avoid extra fees.

We recommend bringing enough Moroccan Dirhams in small denominations and using cards mainly for hotels or larger restaurants. ATMs are available near the medina if you need to withdraw more cash, but they may charge foreign transaction fees depending on your bank.

    Is Essaouira safe for travelers?

We found Essaouira to be very safe, especially compared to busier cities like Marrakech. The medina felt calm, and we didn’t encounter aggressive vendors, people asking for money, or any pressure to buy things. The relaxed vibe made it easy to wander, shop, and enjoy our day trip at our own pace.

That said, we still followed basic travel safety practices—like using RFID-blocking sleeves for our credit cards and dressing modestly to blend in with local customs. While Essaouira is generally low-risk, it’s always wise to be mindful of your belongings, especially in crowded areas or markets.

Quick Review & Final Tips for Your Essaouira visit
