How to Get to Santorini, Greece
We, at Discovering Destinations, chose to arrive in Santorini by ferry from Athens.
Since we had already rented a car for our 25-day trip around Greece, we decided to bring it along on the ferry. However, in hindsight, we would advise against this unless you’re ready to spend an extra 400 euros for the car ferry fee.
For most travelers, it’s more cost-effective to rent a vehicle once on the island.
Here’s what you need to know about getting to Santorini:
Ferry from Athens to Santorini
Taking a ferry is a popular way to travel between Athens and Santorini.
Here’s some essential info:
- Ferry gate number: Make sure you know your ferry’s gate number in advance. Our ferry ticket didn’t include it, and we had to stop at the agency to confirm before arriving at the port.
- Car parking: If you’re not taking your car, you can leave it parked at the Athens port. Check online for prices and availability.
- Onboard experience: Our ferry resembled an airplane on the inside, with a snack bar, clean restrooms, and comfortable seating. However, there was no outdoor deck to enjoy the views, and the trip took about 7 hours due to multiple stops along the way.
- Seasickness: If you’re prone to seasickness, bring medication. We felt the boat’s movement, especially during the last hour of the trip.
- Wi-Fi: It wasn’t free, but we paid around 3 euros (May 2024) for 3 hours of access.
- Luggage: There’s no weight limit for luggage, which is great for travelers with heavy bags.
If you prefer a more affordable option, skip bringing a car and rent one upon arrival in Santorini.

Flying from Athens to Santorini
Flying to Santorini is fast and convenient, especially for those short on time. The island’s airport is Santorini (Thira) International Airport (JTR). Major airlines like Aegean Airlines and Ryanair operate flights between Athens and Santorini, with flight times of around 45 minutes.
Here’s why flying might be a good option:
- Flight duration: It’s only about 45 minutes, and the airport is located just a short drive from the main towns of Fira and Oia.
- Luggage restrictions: Be mindful of your airline’s luggage policies, as extra fees can apply.
- Advance planning: You’ll need to be at the airport 2-3 hours before your flight, so plan accordingly.

Best Places and Hotels to Stay in Santorini

We stayed at the Aegean Melody Suites, located in a peaceful area away from the busy towns of Fira and Oia. This was perfect for us, as it gave us a quiet retreat after a day of exploring. Aegean Melody Suites & Villa
With a perfect rating of 10.0 on Hotels.com and 4.9 on Google, Aegean Melody Suites is a hidden gem that offers peace, privacy, and luxury without the Oia price tag.
Located just 25 minutes from Santorini’s port and 27 minutes from the airport, the hotel is a short walk from Perivolos Beach and also close to other beautiful spots like Vlychada Beach. Additionally, we loved the tranquil atmosphere, far from the hustle and bustle of Oia and Fira.
Moreover, we stayed in a King Suite with a private jetted swimming pool, and let me tell you—it was pure bliss! Every morning, we enjoyed a complimentary breakfast delivered to our suite, and later at night, we relaxed with dips in our private pool.
Even though we didn’t have a beach view, we loved everything about our stay, especially the privacy and peacefulness after a long day of exploring Santorini. However, for those who prefer a beach view, you can still enjoy it at Aegean Melody for half the price of Oia!
What we loved about Aegean Melody Suites:

Akrotiri Archaeological Site, Santorini
As per Wikipedia, Akrotiri is a prehistoric settlement dating back to the Minoan Bronze Age. It was preserved in volcanic ash after a major eruption, often referred to as the “Greek Pompeii.” This ancient site offers a captivating glimpse into Greek history, with well-preserved frescoes, pottery, and multi-storied buildings that provide insight into ancient life on the island.
We bought tickets directly at the site, but you can check their official website for up-to-date ticket prices and opening hours: Akrotiri Museum.
Alternatively, you can book tours through Get Your Guide that include visits to both Akrotiri and the famous Red Beach nearby.
Megalochori, Santorini
Megalochori is a quaint and charming village that was recommended by our hotel manager, Emma.
We easily found parking near Petra Kouzina, a popular spot for Greek cooking classes.
The best way to explore Megalochori is to get lost in its narrow alleys, where you’ll discover beautiful churches, blue-domed structures, and local craft shops.
We recommend trying ice cream at Mr. Scoop or, if you have more time, enjoy a wine tasting at Gavalas Winery, one of Santorini’s oldest family-run wineries.
Kamari Beach, Santorini
After visiting Megalochori, we headed to Kamari Beach, a beautiful beach destination in Santorini, where we planned to have dinner at To Pinakio, a restaurant highly recommended by locals and the Eyewitness Travel Guide Greece, which was actually really helpful and you can check it out at Amazon.

After dinner, we explored the local shops and enjoyed the stunning sunset over Kamari Beach, which happens around 8:30 p.m. in May.
Kamari Beach was a pleasant surprise, offering a more affordable alternative to Oia or Fira, while still providing a beachside atmosphere with plenty of activities, restaurants, and shopping.
It’s also conveniently located near the airport, making it a great place to stay on a future visit to Santorini!
Fira, Santorini’s Capital
Fira is the capital of Santorini and is known for its vibrant atmosphere, stunning views of the caldera, and lively streets lined with shops, restaurants, and bars. We were fortunate to find parking and then made our way to find the perfect sunset spot.
Fira is famous for its views, and we recommend Boozery as a potential place to have a drink while watching the sunset. However, when we arrived, we found that Boozery was only offering take-out drinks, so we decided to continue our search for a great viewing spot.
For sunset lovers, it’s worth spending some time exploring the area to find the best vantage point, but be prepared to make a reservation if you want to enjoy a meal or drink during the sunset.
Afterward, we wandered through Fira, visiting some of the island’s famous spots:
- The Archaeological Museum of Thera: Housing artifacts from ancient Akrotiri and other parts of the island.
- The Orthodox Metropolitan Cathedral: With its impressive domes and stunning interior.
- Cable Car Ride: For breathtaking views down to the old port.
There are plenty of shops and restaurants in Fira to enjoy, and the evening ambiance is magical with the sunset colors still lingering in the sky.

Second Day in Santorini, Greece
Oia, or Oía (Greek) – Santorini
Our second day in Santorini started with a visit to the famous village of Oía, a must-see destination known for its stunning sunset views, white-washed houses, and iconic blue-domed churches.
Oía is perched on the northwestern tip of Santorini and offers breathtaking views of the caldera and the Aegean Sea. The village is often considered one of the most picturesque spots in Greece, attracting visitors worldwide.
We were fortunate to find a parking spot near the Maritime Museum and began our exploration from there.
Even in May, the streets were crowded, and we could only imagine how packed it gets during the summer. The best way to enjoy Oía is by wandering through its narrow streets, filled with charming shops, cozy restaurants, and paths that lead to its famous landmarks.
Here are some points we recommend you visit while in Oía:
- Oía Castle (Kasteli): The ruins of this castle offer one of the most famous sunset spots in Santorini, providing a panoramic view of the caldera and the village.
- Maritime Museum: A historical museum showcasing Santorini’s maritime heritage.
- Blue-Domed Churches: These are quintessential Santorini landmarks that everyone must see, and they provide stunning photo opportunities.
- Ammoudi Bay: Located below Oía, this small port is a great place for seafood restaurants and a quieter spot to take in the beauty of the caldera.
Make sure to explore the hidden paths that lead to unique viewpoints offering amazing views of the caldera and the legendary Santorini sunsets.
Beer Tasting at Santorini Brewing Company – Yellow Doney Beer
As most of our followers know, Serge is a beer enthusiast, so we made sure to visit the Santorini Brewing Company, home to the famous Yellow Donkey beer. The brewery offers a great beer-tasting experience, and we had the pleasure of meeting Barbara and Gina, who were incredibly friendly and knowledgeable about local beers.
They gave us fantastic tips for visiting Santorini, including the next spots we’ll be talking about. Our simple beer tasting turned into an hour-long conversation as they shared stories and recommendations, all while the brewery was about to close!

Prophet Elias Monastery, Santorini best views
One of the first places Barbara and Gina recommended was the Prophet Elias Monastery, and it was truly worth the visit. Located on the summit of Mount Profitis Ilias near the village of Pyrgos, this monastery sits at the highest point on the island, approximately 567 meters above sea level.
The views from here are nothing short of breathtaking, offering a panoramic view of Santorini, the caldera, and even as far as neighboring islands.
The monastery itself is peaceful, and while we’re not sure if the inside is open to the public, we spent over an hour wandering the gardens and taking in the serene atmosphere.
The area is a perfect spot for photography, and the best part? There’s no entrance fee! They also have a small store where you can buy local products and souvenirs.
This monastery, built in the 18th century, has been a part of Santorini’s spiritual and cultural heritage for centuries. It’s not only a place of worship but also a significant historical site with fantastic views that make it a must-visit for anyone exploring Santorini.
Pyrgos, Santorini
We ended our day with dinner in Pyrgos, a charming village that was once the capital of Santorini. It’s known for its well-preserved medieval architecture and narrow streets that wind up to Pyrgos Castle. After a lovely uphill walk, we finally found Franco’s Café, which was recommended to us for its amazing sunset views. We hadn’t made a reservation, but they kindly seated us at a nice spot with a breathtaking view.
Franco’s Café offers a stunning terrace where you can watch the sun sink into the horizon while enjoying dinner. We highly recommend making a reservation to ensure a prime spot on the edge of the terrace.
After dinner, we took a leisurely stroll around Pyrgos, which is full of history. Pyrgos Castle, also known as Kasteli, was built in the 15th century and is one of the five fortified castles on the island. It once served as a lookout point for pirate invasions. Today, visitors can explore the ruins and enjoy panoramic views of the island.
Pyrgos is much less crowded than Oía, and its laid-back atmosphere makes it a great spot to experience the more authentic side of Santorini. It’s truly a hidden gem worth exploring.
Third Day in Santorini, Greece
Santa Irini Bakery Shop, Santorini
Although we had an amazing breakfast served in our room at the hotel, we couldn’t resist stopping by Santa Irini Bakery Shop.
It’s a great spot to pick up a few snacks for your road trip.
Whether you’re in the mood for delicious local sweets, freshly baked bread, or just a coffee to-go, this place is worth the stop! If you’re passing by, take the time to enjoy the flavors of this local gem.
Winery Tasting, Santorini
Santorini is famous for its wine, and there are countless wineries with great reviews to choose from. We took Barbara and Gina’s advice (from Yellow Donkey Beer) and visited two highly recommended wineries.
Art Space Art Gallery – Winery – Museum After a little research, we discovered that Art Space Winery is not only a winery but also an art gallery and museum. The winery is located in a historic building, offering visitors a glimpse of Santorini’s art and history. We paid €20 per person for a quick tour alongside another couple from Montreal.
The tour was brief, but the art collection was beautiful, featuring both local and international works. The wine tasting included delicious local wine and some cheeses to accompany it. However, we felt the visit was rushed due to another large group arriving right after us. The winery has a parking lot if you’re traveling by car, making it easily accessible. Gavalas Winery Located in Megalochori village, Gavalas Winery is a family-owned business and one of the oldest wineries in Santorini. Known for its traditional winemaking methods, this small but charming winery is a must-visit. We didn’t pay to enter and found it very busy, even at 11:30 a.m., so it’s best to check their website for reservations. Gavalas has a store where you can buy some of their wines, and we found it more relaxed than Art Space Winery. Click here to check their official website.
If you’re planning to visit during the busy summer months, consider booking a wine tour through Get Your Guide, which often includes multiple wineries, wine tastings, and can help you skip the lines.
Vlichada Beach & Vlichada Marina
Vlichada Beach was another local recommendation, and it was absolutely worth it! The beach is framed by impressive cliffs and is much quieter than the more touristy spots. Although it’s not a sandy beach, we enjoyed soaking up the sun while Serge took plenty of photos of the unique cliffs.
After spending time at the beach, we wandered over to Vlichada Marina for a delicious lunch at The Fisherman’s House, a traditional Greek restaurant that serves fresh fish and local cuisine. The prices were reasonable, and the food was fantastic!
Afterward, we drove up to To Psaraki, a restaurant overlooking the marina, for a drink and to enjoy the breathtaking views. It’s the perfect place to relax and take in the scenic surroundings.
Emporio (Eborio)
Emporio, another hidden gem recommended by Barbara and Gina, is known for its connection to pirate legends. Historically, Emporio was a strategic location for Santorini’s defense against pirate invasions. Its narrow alleyways, castle-like architecture, and labyrinth of streets make you feel like you’ve stepped into the past.
We arrived around 7 p.m., and the village was completely quiet, giving us the perfect opportunity to explore the ancient alleys and castle ruins in peace. The experience was magical, and we highly recommend visiting Emporio for a picturesque escape from Santorini’s more crowded spots.
Before leaving, we stopped at The Old Barber Shop, a charming café offering stunning views of the village and the sea. It’s a great spot to relax with a drink and take in the beauty of Santorini.
Emporio is truly a hidden gem, and we can’t recommend it enough for those looking to experience the quieter, more authentic side of Santorini.
