How to Get to Nafplio Old Town from Athens, Greece:
Getting to Nafplio Old Town from Athens is simple and convenient.
You can drive, take a bus, or even book a day trip guided tour.
Get to Nafplio by Car
Nafplio is located on the eastern coast of the Peloponnese peninsula, about a two-hour drive from Athens.
In our opinion, the most convenient way to reach Nafplio is by car, as it allows you the flexibility to explore scenic routes along the way. You’ll also pass by the famous Corinth Canal, which is definitely worth a quick stop.
We believe you’ll absolutely fall in love with Nafplio Greece’s Old Town, and it’s also worth visiting Nafplio’s New Town if you have some free time.
Nafplio Old Town offers numerous activities, restaurants, cafes, and stunning sea views—especially during sunset.

Tolls from Athens to Nafplio – Greece
As we already mentioned in our Tolo’s Beach blog, we want to highlight that there are a few tolls to pay on the way from Athens to Nafplio as well.
While we don’t remember the exact amount we spent, we found a site called Toll Guru Greece, which can help you calculate the toll costs. We’re not sure how accurate this site is, but it might help you plan how much you’ll need in euros if you prefer to pay in cash, as we did.

Athens: Bus Transfer to/from Nafplio
Alternatively, there are buses from Athens to Nafplio, offering a comfortable and affordable option.
For a more private experience, consider booking a private tour or group tour through services like GetYourGuide. Keep in mind that Nafplio is a stunning city with both a vibrant New Town and a gorgeous historic area by the water.
However, many guided group tours only allow about an hour to explore Nafplio’s Old Town, so we recommend you read what the guided tours offer and compare it.
Where to Stay in Nafplio, Greece
At Discovering Destinations, we stayed at Tolo Beach for 25 days, which allowed us to visit Nafplio multiple times since it’s just a 17-minute drive from Tolo Beach.
When it comes to accommodations, Nafplio offers a variety of options to suit every budget and preference. Whether you’re looking for a charming boutique hotel or a budget-friendly stay, you’ll find plenty of choices in and around the town.
Here are two hotels we found in the city that we loved for their locations and great reviews on Google. We highly recommend them and are even considering them for our next trip to Nafplio, Greece.
Nafsimedon Hotel – Nafplio, Greece
Our first suggestion is the Nafsimedon Hotel, perfectly located in front of the beautiful Kolokotronis Park and offering stunning views of the Fortress of Palamidi.
It’s just a short walking distance from both Nafplio’s New Town and its historic site, making it easy to explore both sides of Nafplio.
This is definitely a top choice for our return to Nafplio. We were so impressed by its beauty that we took many pictures of the hotel, an authentic 19th-century neoclassical mansion that has been renovated to offer a unique experience reminiscent of the historical past of Greece’s first capital.
You’ll be pleasantly surprised to find that the price is very reasonable, at least as of August 2024, when we are writing this Travel Blog about Nafplio Old Town.
Silo Luxury Rooms – Nafplio, Greece
If you prefer a more luxurious experience and wish to stay closer to Nafplio’s historic area, consider the Silo Luxury Rooms. This hotel is situated on a quiet street just steps away from all the activities of Old Town Nafplio.
We snapped some photos when passing by and, after doing some research, we were impressed. You’ll enjoy gorgeous views of the Bourtzi Fortress and the Aegean Sea, offering a perfect balance between exploring the surrounding beauty and enjoying the peace, comfort, and charm of the rooms.
The building, which dates back to the early 19th century, is a historical representation of Nafplio’s neoclassical architecture. In 2021, it was fully refurbished by the owner Stelios Maragos and his family, using high-quality natural materials to maintain its historical charm while bringing it into the 21st century.
It’s incredible to think that for the same price as a standard, unremarkable hotel in Canada, you can stay in this amazing location in the heart of Nafplio’s Old Town, which is also within a 20-minute walk to Nafplio’s New Town.

Things to Do in Nafplio Old Town, Greece
Nafplio Old Town is packed with history, stunning architecture, and charming streets to explore. During our stay in Tolo Beach, we visited Nafplio Old Town several times and instantly fell in love with its captivating atmosphere.
We spent our days wandering through the quaint streets, snapping photos, grabbing drinks in the lively main square, indulging in delicious ice cream and coffee, and even meeting friendly locals who invited us to a party!

Palamidi Fortress is one of the most iconic landmarks in Nafplio Old Town. You can spot it from afar as you approach the city. The fortress stands proudly on a hilltop, offering stunning views of Nafplio and the sea. You have two options to reach the top: drive up or climb the 999 steps if you’re up for a challenge. We opted to drive, but for those who love adventure, the climb is absolutely worth it!
A Brief History of Palamidi Fortress
- Venetian Origins: The Venetians built Palamidi Fortress between 1711 and 1714. It is now one of the best-preserved examples of Venetian fortification architecture.
- Eight Bastions: The fortress consists of eight bastions. Each one has its own name and was used for different purposes. These bastions played a vital role in defending the region from Ottoman invasion.
- Greek Independence: Palamidi had a significant role during the Greek War of Independence. Afterward, it was even used as a prison, adding to its rich history.

While we chose to capture Bourtzi Castle from the shore of Nafplio Old Town, visiting the castle is definitely an experience worth considering. If you have the chance, taking the boat ride out to Bourtzi will provide you with a unique and breathtaking view of Nafplio from the water.

- Built by the Venetians: Constructed in 1473 by the Venetians, Bourtzi Castle was designed to protect Nafplio from pirate and enemy attacks. Its strategic location made it a key defensive structure during various historical periods.

The Old Parliament in Nafplio Old Town is a significant historical landmark. Built in the early 18th century, this neoclassical building originally served as a mosque during the Ottoman era before becoming Greece’s first parliament after independence in the 1820s. Its walls witnessed key political decisions that shaped the nation.
Today, the building is used for cultural events and exhibitions. A visit to the Old Parliament not only offers a look into Nafplio’s rich history but also showcases beautiful architecture, making it a must-see while exploring the old town.
Visit Armiriki – Workshop, Mini Museum & Store – Old Town Nafplio
Although we’ll provide more shopping suggestions later in this blog, we want to highlight Armiriki right now because it’s much more than just a store. Armiriki is a mini museum, workshop, and store offering limited-edition artist-designed t-shirts.
We initially went inside because we were drawn to the beautiful shirts displayed in the window. Once inside, we discovered they were offering a free map of Nafplio Old Town featuring 14 historic points of interest and lots of helpful local tips for exploring Nafplio.
In addition to the store’s gorgeous clothing, we found a mini museum showcasing the industrial history of textile materials in the Argolis plain during the 20th century. The store also has a thematic library, a bookstore, and produces in-house t-shirts that are cut, labeled, sewn, and made right there in Nafplio.
We highly recommend stopping by Armiriki to grab your map and chat with Nectaria, who works at the store. She was incredibly friendly, gave us fantastic tips on places to visit around Nafplio, and shared insightful lessons about the history behind their products.

Komboloi Museum – A Unique Visit in Nafplio Old Town, Greece
The Komboloi Museum in Nafplio Old Town offers a unique and captivating experience. Unlike other museums, this small gem is dedicated to the komboloi—traditional Greek worry beads. Established in 1998, the museum showcases a fascinating collection of komboloi made from various materials, including amber, coral, wood, and silver.
Visitors can learn about the history and cultural significance of komboloi in Greek society. The museum also houses a workshop where new pieces are crafted, maintaining this ancient tradition. After exploring, you can visit the museum shop to purchase an authentic komboloi as a meaningful souvenir.
Tip: The museum is located close to Syntagma Square, making it a convenient stop while exploring the charming streets of Nafplio Old Town.
Relax with an Ancient Greek Massage – Nafplio Old Town
We heard great things about the Ancient Greek Massage at Panta-Rei Spa, and though we didn’t get to try it, it’s on our list for next time! Panta-Rei has a 4.9-star rating (as of May 2024) and offers a variety of treatments inspired by ancient Greek wellness, including their signature Ancient Greek Massage with natural oils.
It’s the perfect way to unwind after exploring Nafplio. If you have time, we recommend adding this spa experience to your itinerary.

Enjoy an Ice Cream in Nafplio Old Town
No visit to Nafplio Old Town is complete without indulging in some of the delicious ice cream that the town has to offer. Ice cream shops are everywhere, and the hardest part is deciding where to go! During our 25 days in Nafplio, we tried about five different places, and we can honestly say that they were all fantastic.
With many of these shops boasting high ratings on Google, it’s clear they’re popular for a reason. To help you out, here are our top recommendations based on what we enjoyed most:
- L’amande – Located at Plapouta 14, this cozy spot offers a variety of flavorful and creamy ice creams.
- Retro Latteria – Found at Farmakopoulon 9, this shop is cash-only but well worth it for the quality of their ice cream.
- Koustenis Ice Cream – Located at Vasileos Konstantinou 16, this shop is known for its rich, traditional flavors.
- Gelarto Nafplio – You can find this gem at Eth. Antistasis 4, offering some of the best gelato in town.
- Kentrikon – Located in Syntagma Square, try their famous Loukoumades (Greek donuts) served with ice cream for a perfect Greek dessert experience.

Get Lost in Nafplio Old Town
Nafplio Old Town is a place where you don’t need a strict itinerary. While we could list all the historical points and must-do activities, the best way to experience Nafplio is to simply get lost in its cobblestone streets. Wander aimlessly and let yourself be captivated by the charm of the old architecture, stunning neoclassical buildings, and beautiful floral displays.
One of the most iconic sights in Nafplio are the bougainvillea flowers. These vibrant pink and purple blooms spill over balconies and stone walls, adding a pop of color to every corner. The town’s mix of rich history and lush greenery makes it a photographer’s paradise.
Nafplio is perfect for those who love to take photos, step back in time, and enjoy a slow-paced afternoon. Stop by one of the many local gelato shops for a sweet treat, relax in a quiet square, or simply watch the world go by from a cozy café.

Shopping Time in Nafplio Old Town
I (Eli) can honestly say, even without a big shopping budget, I absolutely loved every shopping experience in Nafplio Old Town. Whether you’re looking for souvenirs for friends and family, or elegant, colorful clothing and unique crafts, Nafplio has something for everyone. From stylish shoes to beautiful jewelry, the town’s shops offer a wide variety of treasures.
One standout experience for us was visiting George and Nicole’s grocery store, Anapliotiko Mpakalico, where you can find organic and locally-sourced Greek products. We stocked up on goodies to take home, and George and Nicole were so friendly that they even invited us to a party at their store!

Arvanitia Promenade – A Scenic Walk in Nafplio Old Town
We saved the Arvanitia Promenade for last because, although we didn’t get a chance to do it, it’s definitely on our list for when we return to Nafplio, Greece.
The Arvanitia Promenade is one of the most scenic walking paths in Nafplio Old Town, offering breathtaking views of the Argolic Gulf and the Palamidi Fortress above. This seaside trail starts near the Old Town and is perfect for a peaceful stroll or a romantic sunset walk.
As you walk along the promenade, you’ll pass through lush greenery, rocky cliffs, and even a small beach at the end. It’s the ideal spot for relaxation and capturing stunning photos of Nafplio’s coastal beauty.

Paralia Karathonas Beach – A Hidden Gem Near Nafplio
We saved the best for last! As Canadians living in Montreal, we know that many tourists visiting Greece, like us, are often seeking beautiful beaches, sunny weather, and the perfect spot to swim. Luckily, you can find just that near Nafplio Old Town!
Paralia Karathonas Beach is only a 9-minute drive from Nafplio Old Town, offering calm, crystal-clear waters, soft sandy shores, and breathtaking views. It’s the ideal place to spend a day relaxing by the sea, swimming, or, like us, snapping some stunning photos of the picturesque surroundings.
At night, especially during the summer, the beach livens up with a more vibrant atmosphere. There are beach bars and restaurants that stay open late, offering food, drinks, and sometimes live music. It’s a great spot to unwind after a day of exploring Nafplio or enjoy a beachside evening during the summer season.
