In 2019, we from Discovering Destinations embarked on an incredible two-week adventure across Portugal.
Part of our journey included a road trip from Lisbon to several key cities, such as Fátima, Coimbra, Talasnal, Porto, and the medieval village of Marvão in the Alentejo region. From Marvão, we drove 4h30min down to the Algarve region, a stunning coastal area in southern Portugal. There are a few ways to travel from Lisbon to Algarve, whether you prefer driving, public transportation, or a guided tour. Let’s explore each option.
Going to Algarve by Car from Lisbon
If you’re planning to drive from Lisbon to Algarve, you’ll be looking at around a 2.5-3 hour journey depending on traffic. The total distance is approximately 250 km (155 miles). Here’s what you need to know:
- Pros:
- Flexibility to stop and explore other destinations along the way.
- Direct and convenient, especially for families or groups.
- Scenic views of the Portuguese countryside and coastal areas.
- Cons:

Personally, we from Discovering Destinations love a road trip in Europe, specially in Portugal that we thought the road were great and the views getting to Algarve were just something to remember for the rest of our lives. While flying from Lisbon to the Algarve is an option, it’s not the most common choice due to the short distance. The nearest airport in the Algarve is Faro Airport, located in the eastern region. The flight itself takes about 45 minutes, but when you factor in the time spent at the airport, going through security, and boarding, driving or taking the train is often faster and more convenient.
Pros of Flying from Lisbon to the Algarve:
- Quick flight time of only 45 minutes.
Cons of Flying:
- Extra time required for airport security and boarding.
- You’ll need transportation to and from both airports.
- Baggage limitations are often stricter on smaller planes, and you may need to pay extra for checked luggage.

Hotels Algarve, Portugal
When we visited Algarve back in 2019, we chose to stay in Aljezur, Portugal. While we loved the stunning Praia da Arrifana and the peaceful surroundings, as Serge explains in our vlog, we found that Aljezur is quite far from the main attractions we wanted to visit during our 2 days itinerary in Algarve, like Benagil Cave, Carvoeiro, and Lagos.
