Gytheio is a charming coastal town in the southern Peloponnese, once serving as the main port of ancient Sparta. Today, it is known for its colorful harbor, fresh seafood tavernas, and its proximity to beautiful beaches like Mavrovouni and Selinitsa, home to nesting sea turtles.

One of Gytheio’s unique attractions is the Dimitrios Shipwreck, located on Valtaki Beach. This abandoned ship, resting on the sand since the 1980s, offers a stunning and eerie backdrop for photography. Legends surround the ship, suggesting it was abandoned under mysterious circumstances, adding a touch of mystery to its appeal.

You can learn more about it at Wikipedia or Greka website.

Gytheio is also known for the Kranai Islet, connected to the mainland by a narrow causeway. According to local legend, this is where Paris and Helen of Troy spent the night before fleeing to Troy, sparking the famous Trojan War.

With its ancient theater, museums, and traditional Greek towers, Gytheio combines history and culture with laid-back seaside charm, making it a great addition to any Peloponnese itinerary.
