We spent 25 days traveling around Greece and rented a small apartment located in Tolo Beach, Greece. Travelling from Tolo to this region took us roughly 3h30.
However, we understand most of people that travel to Greece are located in the Athens region for its flexibility. It’s generally easier to get around, especially if you are planning to get to the famous Greek Islands like Santorini.
Athens is also a great hub for getting to many other parts of Greece. For this reason Delphi and Arachova are one of the famous destinations for Day tours offered.

Driving to Delphi is a great option if you prefer flexibility. You can easily rent a car in Athens from the airport or within the city. Whether you rent for the day or for several, you’ll be able to fully enjoy the Delphi and Arachova regions.
We recommend (if time permits of course) that you plan a 3-day trip to this region. This way you will explore the mountains and history of Greece even further as you reach Arachova, Delphi, and Meteora.

While we don’t remember the exact amount we spent in tolls, there’s a site called Toll Guru Greece that can forecast the cost. We’re not sure how accurate this site is, but it might help you plan how much you’ll need in euros if you prefer to pay in cash, as we did.

From Athens to Delphi By Public Transportation
Even though we didn’t use public transportation for our trip to Delphi, we found some options online for those who prefer not to drive and have more time to explore Greece.
According to Google Maps, there is no continuous direct bus route to Delphi, and travel time could take between 5 to 7 hours with connections.
However, we found that you can inquire at KTEL Athens Liosion Bus Station for direct bus options. One of the most convenient ways appears to be a direct bus from Athens to Delphi, which takes about 3 hours.
These buses depart from the KTEL Athens Liosion Bus Station and drop you off directly in Delphi, making it a straightforward and budget-friendly option. Keep in mind that buses operate on a set schedule, so planning ahead is essential.
Tips for Taking the Bus to Delphi
- Travel Time: The direct bus from Athens to Delphi takes approximately 3 hours.
- Tickets: Tickets can be purchased at the KTEL station or through their official website.

Since we drove to Arachova, spending the afternoon in Delphi and next day we were leaving to Meteora, we decided to spend one night in Arachova.
It was funny that we drove through Arachova to get to Delphi, then since we loved the village we spent one hour discovering the picturesc streets, then we head to Delphi thinking our Hotel was further on.
However after visiting the archeological site of Delphi we realized our hotel it was in Arachova and we loved the surprise, specially because the hotel was just perfect, cozy and elegant, and it was in our budget including breakfast, since we visited on May 2024 in a quiet season.

Here are some tips we’d like to share with you about things to know before visiting Delphi, Greece. We believe these tips will help make your experience even better!
- Parking: When we arrived at Delphi, we made a quick stop at the Castalian Spring before heading to the main archaeological site. Unfortunately, we didn’t find parking in front of the site, so we drove about 7 minutes into Delphi village to park. From there, we walked back to the site. This was in May, outside of peak season, so keep in mind that you may need to walk a little if parking is full, especially during busier months.
- Visit the Castalian Spring: This spring, located near the entrance, holds historical significance as a purification site for ancient pilgrims. It’s worth a quick stop to connect with Delphi’s spiritual past.
- Opening Hours: Always check the opening hours for both the Archaeological Site and Delphi Museum, as they can vary. When we visited in May 2024, we were lucky to arrive at around 3 p.m., just an hour before the museum closed. On that specific day, the museum closed earlier than usual. To avoid surprises, we recommend checking their official website or confirming with your guided tour in advance if you’re traveling from Athens.
- Start with the Museum: We suggest starting your visit with the museum. Seeing the artifacts on display enhanced our understanding of the archaeological site and deepened our curiosity about the buildings we were about to explore. Arachova, Greece – A Cozy Mountain Escape
Leaving Athens for Delphi, you’ll pass through Arachova, a village known for its cozy atmosphere, winter sports, and traditional charm.
When we booked our stay at Hotel Xenonas Iresioni in Arachova, we didn’t know much about the village. Our original plan was to drive straight to the Delphi Archaeological Site and find a budget-friendly hotel nearby. However, as we passed through Arachova, we instantly fell in love with it. We stopped for an hour to take pictures and soak in the atmosphere—and we were thrilled when we realized we’d be coming back for the night!
Wander through the narrow streets, enjoy coffee at a local café, and don’t miss dining at To Tsoukali, our number one favorite restaurant in Greece.

One place we didn’t consider initially but is now on our list for our next trip to Greece is Galaxidi, Greece’s Hidden Gem 45 minutes by car from Delphi.
We love small towns by the water, and if you have the chance, we highly recommend taking a quick drive there to enjoy some fresh seafood and soak in the calm atmosphere along the west coast of the Gulf of Itea.
If you’d prefer to stay near the water with mountain views, we totally recommend spending the night in Galaxidi instead of Arachova. Enjoy a delightful seafood dinner by the waterfront and unwind at one of the town’s cozy hotels, such as Nautilus Luxury Suites, which has excellent reviews.
