We drove to Ancient Corinth from Tolo Beach, a scenic 57-minute journey. While many visitors start from Athens, just an hour away by car, there are multiple ways to reach Corinth. Here are some of the best options:

For travelers who prefer flexibility, renting a car for an Ancient Corinth day trip is ideal. From Athens, it’s about a one-hour drive with well-maintained roads. Here’s why we recommend driving:

This short journey transports visitors back in time, and while we initially didn’t know what to expect from the archaeological site, we were thoroughly impressed by its grandeur and the thoughtful layout of historical information.
When we visited in May 2024, parking was convenient, ticket purchasing was straightforward on-site, and the site itself was easy to navigate. Each major attraction within the ruins is clearly marked, with detailed historical descriptions that allow visitors to understand the significance of each building, even if they’re new to the history of Corinth.

- Temple of Apollo: One of Corinth’s oldest and most iconic temples, dating back to the 6th century BC, showcasing impressive Doric columns.

Even though modern Corinth is not considered a bit city by Greek standards, you will find great things to do beyond the ancient ruins of Corinth.
Here are some suggestions based on our Ancient Corinth day trip and our road trip discovering surrounded.
Local Village near Ancient Corinth:
Just outside the Archaeological Site and Museum of Ancient Corinth, you’ll find a charming small village that offers a delightful local experience. Here’s what you can expect:
- Dining: Many restaurants serve delicious traditional Greek food with stunning views of the mountains and sea.
- Shopping: Explore local craft and souvenir shops for unique gifts and mementos.
- Cafés and Treats: Enjoy a coffee or an ice cream at one of the cozy shops.

Our top restaurant suggestion is Aigli Ancient Corinth where we had a great experience, with friendly service and traditional Greek food.

If you have more time, why not make the most of your day trip to Corinth by adding a wine-tasting tour? Corinth is surrounded by beautiful vineyards that offer exceptional Greek wines.

Acrocorinth Castle – Corinth Peloponnese, Greece
Sitting high above the archaeological site, Acrocorinth Castle provides breathtaking panoramic views of Corinth and the surrounding countryside.
This impressive fortress, perched atop a rocky hill, is not only a historical gem but also offers a rewarding hike with unforgettable views.
Unfortunately, we missed the chance to explore it in full due to its early closing time, as we arrived in the afternoon and couldn’t enter.
If you’re planning a visit, we highly recommend heading to Acrocorinth earlier in the day to allow plenty of time for the climb and to explore the castle grounds. It’s truly worth the effort for the views alone!

Corinth Canal or Canal Isthmus – Corinth, Greece
Another activity it’s really famous it’s Corinth Canal, which is a narrow 6 kilometer canal connecting the lonian and Aegean seas.
Unfortunatelly we missed since we were were looking for another suggestions in the region as you will get more information about our Corinth road trip in our travel vlog, and we were also not sure how to visit it.
If you are not comfortable driving or don’t want to miss this attraction as we did, a suggestion it’s to check one of the many Ancient Corinth Day Trip tours at Get your Guide which included the visiting to the Corinth Canal.
Corinth New City – Peloponnese, Greece
If you have extra time, we recommend driving through Corinth’s modern city center, known as New Corinth. Here, you’ll find a lively mix of stores, restaurants, and coffee shops, perfect for a quick stop or a leisurely stroll.
We suggest visiting The Cuppers (Facebook page), a fantastic coffee shop where we grabbed some coffee for the road and enjoyed delicious pastries. It’s a great spot to relax and refuel.
Other Things to Do in Corinth’s New City:
- Visit Eleftherios Venizelos Square: This central square is home to a striking statue of Pegasus, the legendary winged horse and symbol of New Corinth. Pegasus represents strength and freedom, embodying the spirit of the city. The statue is a popular landmark and a great photo spot, set against the bustling square filled with shops and local activity.
- Explore Nearby Shops and Boutiques: Eleftherios Venizelos Square is surrounded by a variety of shops and boutiques where you can browse local products, pick up unique souvenirs, or find Greek fashion items and crafts.
- Relax at a Local Taverna: Around the square, you’ll find cozy tavernas offering traditional Greek dishes. Stop by for a bite to eat, and try some local Corinthian specialties. It’s the perfect way to soak in the lively atmosphere of New Corinth!
New Corinth is an ideal spot to experience the modern side of Corinth while still being close to its historical landmarks.
Best Time of the Year to Visit Corinth, Greece
We visited in May and enjoyed perfect weather with clear skies and mild temperatures. For the best experience, consider visiting in spring or fall when the weather is pleasant, and crowds are lighter. Summer can be hot and crowded, especially around the ruins.
Pro Tip: Always check the weather local forecast before your visit. Even summer days can bring unexpected rain, so plan accordingly.
Ancient Corinth Day Trip: Travel Essentials
Corinth makes for an excellent day trip, especially if you’re short on time in Greece and staying in Athens or Nafplio.
Even for a day trip, preparing with some travel essentials will help ensure you get the most out of your visit to this historical site.
Remember that Corinth is steeped in ancient Greek history, with some challenging terrain. At the archaeological site, you’ll encounter uneven stone paths, sloping hills, and some ancient ruins that require sturdy footwear. The walk up to Acrocorinth Castle is a bit strenuous but well worth it for the views, so comfortable shoes and a bit of stamina will go a long way. Be mindful of the pathways, which can be slippery, especially in wet weather.
