It’s a straightforward way to earn rewards on hotel stays without dramatically changing how you already book travel, which is one of the reasons we’ve continued using Hotels.com since 2022.
How the Hotels.com Stamp System Actually Works
Here’s how the Hotels.com Rewards stamp system works in Canada:
- Every eligible hotel night you complete = 1 stamp
- Collect 10 stamps = 1 reward night
- The value of your reward night is based on the average value of the 10 stamps you collected
That last point is important. Your reward isn’t simply a fixed-value hotel voucher. Instead, its value reflects the average price of the 10 eligible nights that earned your stamps.

At the time of writing, we have 8 stamps collected, with an average stamp value of CA$113.36. Our recent stamps range from around CA$79 to more than CA$200 per night, so you can see how stays at different price points contribute to the final average.
And this isn’t our first reward. Since we started using Hotels.com Rewards, we’ve already redeemed 9 reward nights through the program.
For example, one of our recent reward nights was worth CA$122.82 at Pousada Suíça Mineira Garden in Brazil. Seeing the actual numbers in our account is one of the reasons we wanted to write this Hotels.com Rewards review — the savings have added up over several years of travel.
Hotels.com Rewards Silver vs. Gold
Hotels.com Rewards also has membership levels based on how many stamps you collect during your membership year.
Your membership year lasts 12 months from the date you joined Hotels.com Rewards and then restarts each year. According to Hotels.com Canada, you currently need:

We joined Hotels.com Rewards in September 2020, reached Silver, and then became Gold members in January 2022. We qualified for Gold again in 2022 and 2023. In 2024, we didn’t collect enough stamps during our membership year to maintain Gold status, so our account returned to Silver. We qualified for Silver again in September 2025.
What we like is that changing membership levels does not reset the core reward system. We still collect 1 stamp for every eligible hotel night and receive 1 reward night after collecting 10 stamps.
For us, Silver and Gold are best thought of as extra savings levels on top of the regular stamp program rather than completely different rewards programs.

What Redeeming a Hotels.com Reward Night Actually Looks Like
Once you have a reward night available, Hotels.com lets you apply its value toward an eligible booking.
- Apply your reward night at checkout when booking an eligible stay.
- If the room costs more than your reward value, you pay the difference.
- If the room costs less, the reward covers the eligible amount up to its value.
- Taxes and fees may still need to be paid separately.
- In our experience, the process is straightforward because the reward works much like a credit toward an eligible booking.
- We always check the final total before confirming, especially when the room price is higher than the reward value.
After your stay, the reward night will appear as redeemed in your Hotels.com account. From there, you can easily track your past redemptions, including how many reward nights you’ve used, their values, and available stay details.
Is Hotels.com Rewards Worth It? Our Experience
For us, yes — especially if you book hotels several times a year.
What we like
- It’s free to join. There’s no annual fee or special credit card required.
- The rewards reflect what you actually spend. The value of your reward night is based on the average value of the 10 stamps you collected.
- The system is easy to understand. One eligible night earns one stamp, and 10 stamps earn one reward night.
- You can use the reward toward a more expensive stay. If the room costs more than your reward-night value, you simply pay the difference.
- Member discounts can add another layer of savings. Our current Silver account shows member prices of up to 20% on select hotels.
What to keep in mind
- It can take time to earn a reward night. If you only stay in hotels once or twice a year, reaching 10 stamps may take quite a while.
- Taxes and fees are still payable when using a reward night.
- Stamps and reward nights can expire if you don’t make and complete an eligible booking through your Hotels.com Rewards account within 12 months.
- Membership status can change. Our own account has moved between Gold and Silver over the years as our travel activity changed.
- Some older redemptions in our account no longer display the property name, which makes reviewing our historical stays a little harder.
For us, Hotels.com Rewards has been worthwhile because we already book hotels regularly. We’re not changing the way we travel just to earn rewards — we’re simply collecting stamps on bookings we would have made anyway.

One Thing to Check Before You Book: “Collect & Redeem”
If you’re using Hotels.com Rewards, this is one small detail worth checking before you book.
Not every listing shows the same rewards information, and there are two separate things to look for:
- Can you collect a stamp here? In search results, eligible properties usually show the small moon/stamp icon with wording like “Collect stamps.”
- Can you redeem a reward night here? If you want to use a reward night, it’s worth clicking through to the room details page and checking whether the booking shows “Collect and Redeem.”
In our screenshots, the search results for properties like Le Square Phillips Hotel and Suites and Hotel Zero 1 clearly show “Collect stamps.” Then, on the room details page, we can see “Collect and Redeem,” which confirms that the booking both earns stamps and can be used with a reward night.
It’s a small detail, but it can save you confusion — especially if you’re planning to redeem a reward night on your next stay.
FAQ: Hotels.com Rewards
Do Hotels.com Rewards stamps and reward nights expire?
Yes. Hotels.com currently states that your stamps and reward nights remain active for 12 months from the last date you collected a stamp or redeemed a reward night.
This is one rule we think is especially important to know.
A friend and travel-planning client of ours, Andrea, had earned enough rewards for approximately two hotel nights after a trip to Europe we helped her plan. She didn’t use the rewards before they expired because she wasn’t able to travel again that year. Later, she tried to recover them, but unfortunately wasn’t able to.
Because of her experience, our advice is simple: keep an eye on the expiration date in your Hotels.com account.
If you have a valuable reward night approaching expiration and don’t have a trip planned, it may even be worth considering a local hotel stay or a one-night staycation rather than letting the reward disappear completely.
Of course, only book something you actually want and that makes financial sense — but losing an earned reward simply because you forgot about the expiration date is something we would try to avoid.
Is Hotels.com Rewards really free to join?
Yes. Hotels.com Rewards is free to join. You create an account, sign in before booking, and collect 1 stamp for every eligible hotel night you complete.
There’s no annual membership fee or special credit card required to participate in the Hotels.com Rewards program.
How long does it take for a Hotels.com Rewards stamp to appear?
Hotels.com currently states that stamps are credited to your account 72 hours after checkout.
So if you’ve just completed an eligible hotel stay and your stamp isn’t showing immediately, give it a few days before assuming something went wrong.
How many stamps do you need for a reward night?
You need to collect 10 stamps to earn 1 reward night.
The value of that reward night is based on the average value of those 10 stamps, excluding taxes and fees.
For example, if the average value of your 10 stamps is CA$120, your reward night would be worth approximately CA$120 toward an eligible stay.
What happens if my reward night doesn’t cover the full cost of the room?
If the hotel night costs more than your reward-night value, you simply pay the difference, plus applicable taxes and fees.
If your reward is worth more than the room, Hotels.com currently states that you forfeit the unused difference.
For that reason, we usually try to redeem our reward nights on stays that are reasonably close to the value of the reward.
Can I use more than one Hotels.com reward night in the same booking?
Yes. Hotels.com currently allows you to redeem multiple reward nights in the same booking.
If you’re booking a multi-night stay and only some of the nights are paid for using rewards, you can still collect stamps for eligible nights that are not paid for with a reward redemption.
Can I use a coupon and still collect Hotels.com Rewards stamps?
Not always. Hotels.com currently states that you cannot collect stamps or redeem reward nights when paying with a discount coupon.
The program also excludes package-vacation reservations from collecting or redeeming rewards.
This is another reason we recommend checking the rewards information shown on the specific hotel and rate before completing your booking.
What does “Collect stamps” mean on a Hotels.com listing?
When you see “Collect stamps” beside a hotel listing, it means the eligible stay can earn stamps toward your next reward night.
If your goal is to redeem a reward night, we recommend clicking through to the room details and checking for wording such as “Collect and Redeem” before reserving.
How many stamps do you need for Hotels.com Silver or Gold status?
During your membership year, Hotels.com currently requires:

Can I collect stamps when booking a hotel for someone else?
Hotels.com currently says that you can collect stamps when booking eligible stays for family or friends, as long as the booking qualifies under the Rewards program.
This can be useful if you’re the person in your family who usually organizes and books the hotels.
Are Hotels.com Rewards rules the same forever?
No. Loyalty programs can change their rules, qualification requirements, discounts and redemption terms over time.

Are Hotels.com Gift Cards Part of the Rewards Program?

Gift cards can still be useful as a travel gift or payment option for eligible bookings, but they should be thought of as a separate Hotels.com feature, not a way to earn or redeem Rewards.
