Best Way to Visit the Countryside of São Paulo, Brazil

Before diving into our list of places to explore in the countryside of São Paulo, we want to share one important tip—the best way to visit is by car.

Let’s clear up a common misconception first. São Paulo may not be widely known as a tourist destination, but trust us, there’s plenty to see! Renting a car gives you the freedom to explore at your own pace and uncover hidden gems that most people miss.

At the moment, there are only a few guided tours with local insights available for the countryside. While you’ll find some options on platforms like GetYourGuide—which we often recommend—most focus on popular places like Campos do Jordão or Aparecida do Norte. Tour coverage in less-visited areas is still limited.

That’s why we believe that driving is the best way to experience São Paulo’s countryside. It gives you flexibility, independence, and a more personal journey through one of Brazil’s most underrated regions.

Here are a few reasons why driving is the ideal way to explore:

  • Freedom and Flexibility: Stop whenever you like for scenic views, quaint cafes, or local shops that you might otherwise miss.
  • Hidden Gems: Many destinations are tucked away off the main routes, accessible only if you have the freedom of a car.
  • Customized Itinerary: You can create your own schedule, avoiding crowded tourist times and enjoying a more personal experience.
  • Adventure at Your Pace: Drive through charming towns, nature reserves, and countryside roads without the rush, making each stop as long or short as you want.

Stay Connected While Traveling in Brazil

As a Brazilian myself, I know firsthand how tricky it can be to stay connected while traveling in Brazil. In the past, we’d land in Brazil and head straight to a store to buy a local SIM card from major carriers like TIM or Claro. But here’s the catch—they often require a Brazilian ID (called a CPF) to activate the SIM.

Even though I have a CPF, it’s still a hassle. You wait in line, hope to find someone available to help, and end up choosing a prepaid plan that may only last a few weeks.

Then we discovered Holafly’s eSIM for Brazil, and it was a total game-changer. Now we buy it online before the trip, and by the time we land in São Paulo, we’re already connected. It’s fast, easy, and makes the whole experience much smoother.

Why We Love Using Holafly’s eSIM for Road Trips in Brazil

Traveling through Brazil gets so much easier with reliable mobile data. Here’s why Holafly’s eSIM is our go-to choice, especially when hitting the road:

⚡ Instant Connectivity, No Stress
No need to look for SIM card kiosks or deal with paperwork. With Holafly, we land, activate the eSIM, and we’re online in minutes.

📍 Google Maps at Your Fingertips
Getting around the countryside is stress-free when you’re connected. Holafly keeps Google Maps running so we never lose our way.

💬 WhatsApp for Everything
In Brazil, everyone uses WhatsApp—even my 86-year-old mom! From booking accommodations to staying in touch with friends and family, mobile data is a must.

This tip has truly changed the way we travel in Brazil, and I hope it makes your journey smoother, too!

São Roque, located just 1 hour and 10 minutes from São Paulo, is a charming city within the Countryside of São Paulo.

Known for its Wine Route and beautiful landscapes, São Roque is a wonderful escape from the hustle and bustle of the city, offering unique experiences, rich flavors, and a taste of Brazilian culture.

What to Do in São Roque, São Paulo

Here are some top tips for enjoying a memorable day in São Roque:

Explore São Roque Town

São Roque may be a small town, but it has a few historic landmarks worth visiting. Be sure to check out the Matriz Church of São Roque and the Casa Grande e Capela Santo Antônio. Both places offer a glimpse into local culture and colonial architecture.
While in town, enjoy a meal at one of the many “per kilo” or buffet-style restaurants. They serve up traditional Brazilian dishes at affordable prices.

Visit the Wine Route

A trip to São Roque isn’t complete without exploring its famous Wine Route. We had a great time at Quinta do Olivardo, a winery and restaurant known for its delicious Portuguese cuisine, crafted by Chef Olivardo. The setting is beautiful, and it’s easy to spend half a day there enjoying the food and relaxing.
Another must-visit is Vinícola Góes, one of the top wineries in the area. You can sample local wines and take a tour of their scenic vineyards.

Orquidário Maylasky (Maylasky Orchid Nursery)

If you love flowers, don’t miss the Maylasky Orchid Nursery. I (Eli, from Discovering Destinations) went recently with my mom and Aunt Luiza. They were thrilled with the variety of orchids and the helpful tips shared by the staff. The selection is wide and absolutely beautiful!

Visit Local Stores

São Roque and nearby countryside towns are full of charming local shops. You’ll find homemade sweets, cheeses, jams, and other traditional snacks. One place we recommend is Cafeteria e Doceria Receitas da Roça. It has an outstanding 4.9 rating on Google Reviews and offers amazing cakes, pastries, and Brazilian sweets made with love.

Embu das Artes, São Paulo

Just a 41-minute drive from downtown São Paulo, Embu das Artes is a charming small city known for its vibrant arts and crafts fair, held every week.

The town has a colorful, traditional vibe and a delicious local food scene. It’s the perfect destination for art lovers and food enthusiasts.

As you explore, you’ll find artisan shops selling paintings, sculptures, and handcrafted items that reflect the beauty of Brazilian culture.

Take your time wandering through the historic colonial center, where you’ll come across the stunning 17th-century Church of Our Lady of the Rosary.

Embu das Artes is a great place to discover unique art pieces and handmade goods. Just a heads-up—you may not leave empty-handed!

Embu das Artes: Restaurants and Street Food

You’ll also find a selection of delicious restaurants around Embu das Artes, where you can recharge with authentic Brazilian dishes or sample a variety of local snacks and desserts to fuel your day.

Eli and I always try to make our way there with Eli’s family from Brazil since everyone loves to spend a sunny day at Embu das Artes.

Important to know:

The Feira de Artes e Artesanato (Craft Shops) in Embu das Artes operates on weekends and public holidays only. Specifically, it is open on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays from 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM.

Serra da Cantareira – São Paulo, Brazil

A 45-minute drive from downtown São Paulo brings you to the serene Serra da Cantareira, a perfect escape from the city’s hustle.

While the area is home to Pico do Jaraguá, São Paulo’s highest point, we recommend exploring O Velhão, a unique complex constructed from reclaimed materials. This charming site houses cafés, distinctive shops, and the delightful Restaurante As Véia.

Restaurante As Véia offers a self-service buffet featuring authentic Brazilian countryside cuisine and delectable desserts. A highlight is their ‘cave,’ where you can sample various types of cachaça, Brazil’s traditional spirit, akin to rum and whiskey. This experience provides a genuine taste of Brazilian culture in a rustic and inviting setting.

For more information, visit the official website.

Basilica Nossa Senhora do Rosário, Caieiras – São Paulo, Brazil

If you’re already exploring Serra da Cantareira and O Velhão, we highly recommend adding a visit to the Basilica Nossa Senhora do Rosário in Caieiras to your itinerary.

Just a 15-minute drive from O Velhão, this stunning basilica resembles a European castle with its exquisite architecture and intricate decorations.

The basilica is also home to young people from around the world who come to Brazil to study at the Heralds of the Gospel seminary, making it a unique cultural and spiritual center. The beauty and peaceful atmosphere of this basilica make it a truly special stop.

Important to know:

We visited the Basílica Nossa Senhora do Rosário in Caieiras back in January 2020, and they graciously opened the doors for us to explore its stunning interior. Since then, visitation hours and access policies may have changed, and it’s possible that visits now require advance booking.

To ensure you have the most current information on Mass times and visiting hours, we recommend checking their official website. You can also contact them directly to confirm if visits are currently permitted. This will help you plan your visit accordingly and ensure a smooth experience.

Paranapiacaba is a quaint district within the municipality of Santo André, part of the region known as ABC Paulista.

This unique village was established in the mid-19th century by the British-owned São Paulo Railway Company during the peak of Brazil’s coffee boom.

Paranapiacaba served as a critical transport point for coffee beans, which were shipped to the Port of Santos on the São Paulo coast for export worldwide.

While Paranapiacaba shows signs of age and could use some restoration, it still holds a rustic charm that reflects its rich historical past. Here are a few highlights to discover:

    Chapel on the Hill
The Church of Bom Jesus de Paranapiacaba sits peacefully atop a hill. It’s surrounded by a small, atmospheric cemetery, adding a mystical touch to the village. On foggy days—common here—the scene feels almost otherworldly.

Paranapiacaba’s Natural Beauty and Cultural Attractions

Beyond its historical allure, Paranapiacaba is a destination for nature lovers and cultural enthusiasts alike.

    • Nature Trails: The area offers scenic hiking trails with beautiful views of the surrounding landscape, making it a great spot for a nature-filled adventure.
    • Traditional Carnaval: Paranapiacaba is known for its charming old-style Carnaval celebration. Although smaller in scale, the event brings groups of locals in vibrant costumes who fill the streets with music and joy, creating a lively and nostalgic experience.

Our visit to Paranapiacaba was filled with surprising discoveries, and we highly recommend it as a memorable day trip from São Paulo.
