Athens is amazing on its own, but it’s also one of the best starting points in Greece. Whether you want to visit Delphi, see the monasteries of Meteora, explore ancient sites in the Peloponnese, or enjoy a beach or island day without renting a car, there are plenty of options within reach.
In this guide, we’re sharing the places we personally visited during our Greece road trip, how we’d suggest combining them from Athens, and a few spots we didn’t make it to this time — but are already on our list for next time.

Day Trips We Actually Did
These are the day trips and places we personally visited during our 25-day Greece road trip in May 2024.
Some are easy to do from Athens, while others may be better with a rental car or as part of a longer itinerary.
Here’s what we loved, what surprised us, and how we’d suggest planning them.
Arachova & Delphi — Our Favourite Combo
Distance from Athens: About 2.5 hours by car
Perfect for: History lovers, scenic mountain views, charming villages, and ancient Greek sites
Arachova and Delphi were honestly one of the highlights of our entire 25-day Greece road trip. We didn’t visit them as a day trip from Athens — at that point, we were based in Tolo, in the Peloponnese — but Delphi is absolutely doable from Athens, and it’s actually one of the most popular day trips from the city.
What makes this combination so special is how different it feels from Athens. As you head toward Mount Parnassus, the scenery becomes more dramatic, with mountain views, peaceful villages, and that slower Greek countryside atmosphere we loved so much.
We started with Arachova, a charming mountain village perched above the valley. It has stone-paved streets, cozy cafés, local shops, and a completely different vibe from the busy capital. Even if you only stop for an hour, it’s worth it — and honestly, we think many people miss out by going straight to Delphi without spending a little time here first.
From Arachova, it’s only about 10 minutes to Delphi, one of the most important archaeological sites in ancient Greece. The Temple of Apollo, the ancient theatre, and the breathtaking views over the valley below make this site feel incredibly special. We visited in May 2024, and it was stunning. Mornings are usually the best time to go, before the heat and larger tour groups arrive.
Our tips:
- Go early if you can — the site gets busier and warmer by midday.
- Wear comfortable walking shoes because there is a fair amount of uphill walking.
- Allow at least 2 hours for Delphi itself, plus extra time for Arachova.
- Don’t skip Arachova — it adds so much charm to the day.

Meteora — Worth Every Kilometre
Distance from Athens: About 3.5 to 4 hours by car
Perfect for: Bucket-list views, monastery visits, dramatic landscapes
Let’s be upfront about something — Meteora is possible as a day trip from Athens, but it’s not a quick one. The drive is long, and if you try to rush it, you may spend more time on the road than actually enjoying the monasteries and viewpoints. That said, Meteora is absolutely one of the most extraordinary places we’ve ever seen in Greece. The monasteries built on top of enormous rock formations feel almost unreal, and photos simply don’t do this place justice.
Our honest recommendation: If you’re driving, we’d combine Meteora with Arachova and Delphi over two or three days instead of doing it as a same-day return trip from Athens. Spend one night in Arachova or near Delphi, then continue north to Meteora the next morning. That way, you can enjoy both regions at a better pace without turning the experience into one very long travel day.
Our tips:
- Wear comfortable walking shoes — many monasteries involve stairs, uneven stone paths, and some uphill walking.
- Visit at least two or three monasteries if you have time — each one feels slightly different.
- Go early in the morning or later in the afternoon for softer light and fewer crowds.
- Dress modestly — shoulders and knees should be covered to enter the monasteries.
- Check the opening days and hours before you go, as some monasteries close on different days of the week.
- The town of Kalambaka at the base makes a great overnight stop if you don’t want to rush the experience.
Extra tips:
🎟️ Meteora guided tour from Athens: If you’re based in Athens and don’t want to rent a car, a guided day tour to Meteora can make the logistics much easier. 🎟️ Meteora + Delphi tour idea: If you’re based in Athens and don’t want to rent a car, we’d personally look at a 3-day Meteora and Delphi tour first. Meteora is a long trip from Athens, and having an extra day can make the experience feel less rushed, with more time for the viewpoints, monasteries, and the journey between regions. For travelers with limited time, a 2-day Delphi and Meteora guided tour can still be a practical option, especially if you want transport and logistics handled for you.

💬 Delphi or Meteora — which should you prioritise? If you can only choose one and you’re short on time, Delphi wins for convenience. If you have an extra day and don’t mind the longer drive, Meteora wins for sheer jaw-dropping impact. We’ll be writing a full comparison post on this soon — stay tuned.
Ancient Corinth — A Shorter History Fix
Distance from Athens: About 1.5 hours by car
Perfect for: First-time Greece visitors, half-day trips, combining with Nafplio
Ancient Corinth is one of those places that genuinely surprised us. It may not be as famous as Delphi or Meteora, but the archaeological site is impressive, easy to visit, and usually feels much less crowded. The Temple of Apollo is the main highlight, and even if you’re not a huge history person, it’s the kind of place that helps you picture how important Corinth once was in ancient Greece.
Just above the ancient city sits Acrocorinth, the dramatic fortress overlooking the region. Unfortunately, it was closed when we visited, but the views from the area alone already made us wish we could have explored it properly.
This stop works really well as a natural break between Athens and Nafplio, especially if you have a rental car. It’s a great way to add an ancient site to your route without making the day feel too complicated.
Our tips:
- Wear comfortable walking shoes — the archaeological site has uneven ground, and Acrocorinth involves more walking if you decide to visit the fortress.
- Bring water, sunscreen, and a hat, especially if you’re visiting during the warmer months, as there isn’t much shade around the ruins.
- Combine Ancient Corinth with Nafplio for a full and varied day out, especially if you have a rental car.
- Acrocorinth is a separate visit from the main archaeological site, but it’s absolutely worth adding if you have time and it’s open.
- Don’t skip the small archaeological museum on site — it’s worth allowing about 30 minutes to better understand what you’re seeing.
Extra tips:
🎟️ Ancient Corinth guided tour from Athens: If you’re staying in Athens and don’t want to rent a car, a guided tour to the Corinth archaeological site can be an easy way to visit the ruins, learn more about the history, and avoid planning the transportation yourself. This is a good option if you want a shorter day trip compared to places like Delphi or Meteora.
🎟️ Corinth & Nafplio day trip idea: For a fuller day, we’d also look for a tour that combines Ancient Corinth with Nafplio. It gives you a nice mix of ancient ruins, coastal views, and one of the most charming towns in the Peloponnese — without needing to drive.
Nafplio & Epidaurus — Charm Meets Ancient Theatre
Distance from Athens: About 2 hours by car
Perfect for: Exploring a beautiful old town + visiting an ancient Greek theatre
Nafplio is one of our favourite places in the entire Peloponnese. It’s the kind of town where you park the car, wander through narrow streets, stop for a coffee, and suddenly realize two hours have passed without noticing. Between the Venetian architecture, the waterfront promenade, the charming old town, and the Palamidi Fortress rising above it all, Nafplio has a way of making you want to slow down and stay longer.
Pair your visit with Epidaurus, about 30 minutes away, and you have a full but very rewarding day trip. The ancient theatre is the main highlight — carved into the hillside and famous for its incredible acoustics. It’s one of those places that feels impressive even before you fully understand the history behind it.

Our tips:
- Arrive in Nafplio first, explore the old town, then head to Epidaurus in the afternoon.
- Wear comfortable shoes — Nafplio’s old town has beautiful stone streets, but they can be slippery and uneven, especially if you’re walking a lot.
- If you plan to visit Palamidi Fortress, be ready for lots of steps and uphill walking, but the views are worth it.
- Check if any performances are scheduled at the ancient theatre of Epidaurus — attending one would be a genuinely special experience.
- Enjoy the drive through the Peloponnese countryside, because it’s beautiful on its own.

🎟️ Nafplio guided day trip from Athens: If you’re staying in Athens and don’t want to rent a car, a guided day trip to Nafplio can be a beautiful way to experience one of the most charming towns in the Peloponnese without planning the drive yourself. We’d look for a tour that includes time in Nafplio’s old town, the waterfront, and ideally a stop at Epidaurus or another nearby ancient site to make the day even more rewarding.
Melas Olive Oil Factory + Epidaurus — A Unique Local Day
Distance from Athens: About 2 hours by car
Perfect for: Food lovers, curious travelers, something a little different from the usual tourist circuit
This combination is one we’d recommend to travellers who want to go beyond the typical sightseeing experience. We visited the Melas Olive Oil Factory during our Greece road trip, and it gave us a real, unpretentious look at how Greek olive oil is made and why it matters so much to local culture. The visit included tastings, and the whole experience felt personal, local, and genuinely fascinating — especially if you love food, cooking, or small family-run experiences.
One important note: this is not an easy day trip from Athens without a car. As far as we know, there are currently no regular group tours from Athens that include the Melas Olive Oil Factory, so this stop makes the most sense if you’re renting a car and already exploring the Peloponnese. The good news is that it pairs naturally with Epidaurus nearby, making it a memorable and very different kind of day.

🍋 Love Greek food but don’t have a car? Athens itself has some fantastic food experiences. A traditional Greek cooking class in Athens can be a great way to connect with local food culture without needing to leave the city or rent a car.
Tolo Beach — A Relaxed Day by the Sea
Distance from Athens: About 2.5 hours by car
Perfect for: Beach lovers, a slower pace, combining with Nafplio or Epidaurus.
If you’re traveling with a car and want a proper beach day without heading to an island, Tolo is a lovely option. It’s a small, relaxed seaside village near Nafplio, with calm, clear water and a low-key atmosphere that makes it easy to slow down for a few hours. We stopped here during our Greece road trip, and it was exactly the kind of place that made us wish we had more time to stay.
Our tips:
Tolo is best visited by car, especially if you’re coming from Athens or combining it with other Peloponnese stops. We didn’t find regular guided tours from Athens to Tolo, so this is a better option for travelers renting a car. Combine it with Nafplio and Epidaurus for a full and varied day — history and old-town charm earlier in the day, then beach time in the afternoon.

No Car? No Problem — Island & City Options
Aegina, Agistri & Moni — Island Day Trips by Ferry
How to get there: Ferry from Piraeus, which is about 30 minutes from central Athens by metro
Perfect for: An island feel without flying or a long drive
The islands of the Saronic Gulf are some of the easiest and most popular island day trips from Athens, especially if you’re staying in the city without a rental car. Ferries depart from Piraeus throughout the day, making Aegina and nearby islands a great option if you want a taste of Greek island life without adding a flight or a long journey to your itinerary.
😊 Honest note: We didn’t make it to these islands during our 25-day Greece road trip, but they’re definitely on our list for next time. Aegina especially looks beautiful, with its famous pistachios, the Temple of Aphaia, and a charming port town. We’ve also heard great things from travelers who have visited as an easy escape from Athens.
🎟️ Saronic Islands cruise idea: Since we didn’t make it to Aegina, Agistri, and Moni on this Greece trip, we’d look for a highly rated cruise that makes the logistics easy from Athens. One option that stands out is the Agistri, Metopi & Aegina Cruise with Meals & Drinks, which combines island stops, swimming time, meals, drinks, and pickup options in one full-day experience.
⛴️ Independent ferry option: If you prefer to explore on your own, you can also take the ferry from Piraeus to Aegina and plan your day independently.

Hop-On Hop-Off Athens — Easy Sightseeing + a Beach Morning
How to get there: Departs from central Athens
Perfect for: Flexible sightseeing, first-time visitors, and beach stops without a car
This is not exactly a “day trip” outside Athens, but it’s a great option if you want an easy, flexible day in and around the city without renting a car. Our friend Andrea visited Athens around the same time as our Greece trip, and she had one simple request: she wanted to spend a morning at the beach.
The Hop-On Hop-Off bus ended up being a great solution for her. It covered the main Athens highlights, gave her flexibility to explore at her own pace, and included a beach stop — which made it ideal for a short city stay. She could visit the Acropolis area, head toward the coast later, and return without worrying about taxis, parking, or planning public transportation.
If you’re staying in Athens and want to mix classic sightseeing with a relaxed beach moment, this can be one of the easiest no-car options to consider.
Traditional Cooking Class in Athens — Greek Food Culture
How to get there: In Athens
Perfect for: Food lovers, rainy days, slower travel, and a fun alternative to sightseeing
If you want to slow down and connect with Greek culture in a more hands-on way, a cooking class in Athens is a wonderful option. It’s especially nice if you don’t have a car but still want an experience that feels local and memorable.
Learning to prepare traditional Greek dishes, understanding how ingredients like olive oil are used in everyday cooking, and sharing a meal at the end can be such a fun break from museums, ruins, and busy sightseeing days. It’s also a great option for a rainy day, an evening activity, or travelers who simply love food as much as we do.
A Few We’re Saving for Next Time
We didn’t make it to every place on our Greece wish list during our 25 days on the road — and honestly, that’s not a bad thing. It just means we have a very good reason to go back.
Here is one destination that is already at the top of our list for next time.
Cape Sounion & Temple of Poseidon
How to get there: About 1.5 hours south of Athens by car, or by guided tour
Perfect for: Sunset views, coastal scenery, ancient ruins, and an easy half-day trip from Athens
Cape Sounion is one of the Athens day trips we didn’t manage to fit into our Greece road trip, but it’s definitely on our list for next time. Located along the Athenian Riviera, it’s best known for the Temple of Poseidon, set dramatically on a cliff overlooking the Aegean Sea.
This looks like a great option if you want a shorter escape from Athens without committing to a full 10–12 hour day trip. Many travelers visit in the late afternoon so they can enjoy the coastal drive and watch the sunset from the temple area.
😊 Honest note: Since we haven’t visited Cape Sounion yet, we can’t share personal tips from our own experience. But based on our research, this seems like one of the easiest and most scenic half-day trips from Athens — especially if you love ancient sites with beautiful sea views.
🎟️ Cape Sounion tour idea: If you’re staying in Athens and don’t want to rent a car, a guided sunset tour to Cape Sounion can be a simple way to visit the Temple of Poseidon without planning transportation yourself.
✈️ Bonus Tip: End Your Greece Trip With a Beach
This one is especially for anyone flying home from Athens in the evening. On the very last afternoon of our 25-day Greece road trip, instead of heading straight to the airport, we drove to Paralia Artemidos — a beautiful beach area just about 12 minutes from Athens International Airport.
It was the perfect way to spend our final few hours in Greece. We soaked up the sun, took a slow walk along the shore, and then had dinner at Luuma Restaurant Bar, right on the beachfront.
The atmosphere was relaxed, the food was delicious, and the friendly service made it such a nice place to sit back and reflect on everything we had experienced over the past 25 days.
If you’re flying out later in the day, this is absolutely worth considering instead of spending extra hours in the airport departure lounge. Just make sure to leave enough time for traffic, rental car return, check-in, and security.
It’s a small thing, but for us, ending the trip by the sea made our final day in Greece feel complete.

Should You Rent a Car for Day Trips from Athens?
For several of the trips in this guide, renting a car can make a big difference. Places like Arachova, Delphi, Nafplio, Epidaurus, Tolo, and the Melas Olive Oil Factory are much easier to enjoy at your own pace if you’re driving. Having a car gives you the freedom to stop when you want, take scenic detours, and combine a few places in one day without following a fixed schedule.
That said, not every traveler needs or wants a car in Greece — and that’s completely understandable. The Saronic Islands, Cape Sounion tours, the Hop-On Hop-Off bus, and cooking classes in Athens are all great car-free options. And for places like Delphi, Meteora, Corinth, and Nafplio, guided tours from Athens can be a practical way to visit without worrying about transportation or parking.
If you’re planning a longer Greece itinerary or road trip, we do think having a car gives you the most flexibility, especially in the Peloponnese. For shorter stays in Athens, mixing a few guided tours with easy no-car experiences may be the better choice.
